The Feast of St. Pietro Eremita and Maria SS. delle Grazie is the most important event in Rocca di Botte, a small village in the Marsica area of the province of L'Aquila. Nestled on the slopes of Monte La Corte at an altitude of about 750 meters, it sits on the border between Abruzzo and Lazio. Every year at the end of August, the entire community gathers around its two patron saints to renew a devotion rooted in nearly a thousand years of history.

St. Pietro Eremita, the saint born in the village

The festival is inextricably linked to the figure of St. Pietro Eremita, who was born in Rocca di Botte in the 11th century and died in Trevi nel Lazio on August 30, 1052. After leaving the village to study in Tivoli and take holy orders, the saint dedicated himself to evangelization until his final days. For this reason, Rocca di Botte—his birthplace—and Trevi nel Lazio, where he died and rests, have shared a mutual cult for centuries: during the festival, the two communities exchange visits, forging a bond of brotherhood that spans the Apennines.

In the village, you can still visit the saint's birthplace, which opens to the public during the summer months, featuring rooms that seem frozen in the Middle Ages. The Cammino di San Pietro Eremita (St. Pietro Eremita Trail) also starts in Rocca di Botte, a pilgrimage route connecting sites linked to the saint's life across Abruzzo and Lazio.

Traditions and popular devotion

The heart of the festivities is the procession that winds through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by firecrackers, banners, and the statue of the saint carried on the shoulders of the faithful, alongside religious services also honoring Maria SS. delle Grazie. Among the most characteristic rites is the blessed bread: local women bake bread in the oven of St. Pietro's birthplace and offer it to pilgrims and visitors, a gesture that intertwines the sacred and the everyday according to a custom passed down through generations.

Alongside the religious dimension, the festival thrives on community spirit: music in the square, traditional games, and social gatherings enliven the village, drawing back those who have emigrated and return home specifically for this occasion.

An authentic Abruzzo village

Rocca di Botte preserves a heritage that goes beyond the festival: from the Church of Santa Maria della Febbre, with its 14th and 15th-century frescoes, to the landscapes of the Sirente-Velino Regional Natural Park, home to the Marsican brown bear, wolves, and ancient beech forests. The patronal feast represents the moment when this identity as an authentic Abruzzo village is showcased in its most intense and participatory form.
