About Cantine nella Roccia

Every October, the historic Alto la Terra district of Tagliacozzo, in the province of L'Aquila, transforms for Cantine nella Roccia: over sixty cellars carved into the rock along the ancient Via Valeria open their doors, offering wine, soups, homemade bread, roasted chestnuts, and typical products from the Marsica region. Music, dancing, rural displays, and visits to historic churches accompany a weekend that celebrates the Abruzzese Capetiémpe, the atmosphere of traditional peasant preparations for winter.

Cantine nella Roccia, the autumn festival of Tagliacozzo

Cantine nella Roccia is the food, wine, and folk festival that brings the historic Alto la Terra district to life every October. This is the oldest and most charming part of Tagliacozzo, located in the province of L'Aquila, in the heart of the Abruzzese Marsica. For an entire weekend, the alleys, portals, and underground spaces of the village fill with life, reviving the atmosphere of the Abruzzese Capetiémpe, the ancient time of peasant preparations for the coming winter.

Cellars carved into the rock

The heart of the event lies in the over sixty cellars carved into the rock that overlook the ancient Via Valeria, the Roman consular road that once crossed these territories. For the occasion, these underground spaces, once used to store wine and provisions, are opened to the public and decorated with rural tools, barrels, and traditional objects, becoming taverns, shops, and small scattered museums.

Flavors and typical products

The food and wine itinerary is the true soul of the festival. In the cellars, you can taste local wine, traditional soups and stews, homemade bread, roasted chestnuts, and typical products from the Marsica region, in a culinary journey that combines the pleasure of dining with the discovery of the village. The themed decorations, traditional costumes, and attention to detail turn the visit into an immersive experience.

  • Over 60 cellars, taverns, and shops open to the public
  • Wine, soups, homemade bread, roasted chestnuts, and local products
  • Live music, dancing, and performances in the alleys
  • Guided tours of the district's historic churches
  • Exhibitions and rural-themed displays

Beyond food: culture and tradition

Cantine nella Roccia is also an opportunity to rediscover the village's heritage: during the event, some of the district's historic churches are open for visits, including Santa Maria del Soccorso, San Pietro, Sant'Egidio, and Sant'Antonio Abate. From the district's viewpoints, you can also enjoy a panoramic view of the pine forest and the Imele valley. The festival effectively kicks off the circuit of autumn festivals in the Marsica region, becoming one of the most anticipated events in the area.

Organization

The event is organized by the Associazione Clan Eventi with the patronage and support of the Municipality of Tagliacozzo. Over the years, Cantine nella Roccia has grown to attract thousands of visitors, confirming itself as one of the most characteristic autumn festivals in Abruzzo.
