Artisanal Christmas magic among the cellars and alleys of Cappadocia
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Presepi nel Borgo is the festive event that brings the historic center of Cappadocia to life. Located in the Marsica area of the province of L'Aquila, this small village sits in the mountainous heart of Abruzzo. For a full weekend in December, the village's narrow streets, alleys, and squares transform into an open-air trail, where ancient cellars and historic spaces host handcrafted nativity scenes created by local artists and enthusiasts.
Visitors follow an evocative route through the village, surrounded by the scent of wood and moss, discovering nativity displays in every nook and cranny that bridge popular devotion and creativity. Each cellar holds a small masterpiece, born from the imagination of residents, artisans, and local youth: from traditional scenes to more original interpretations, such as the famous chainsaw-carved reindeer that captivated the public during the first edition.
Alongside the exhibitions, the event features a local craft market offering gift ideas and handmade goods, as well as food stalls serving hot dishes, artisanal sweets, warm drinks, and tastings of Abruzzese food and wine specialties. In the afternoon, children can enjoy creative workshops and entertainment, while the public is invited to vote for their favorite display in the competition for the Presepe nel Borgo Trophy.
Organized by the Pro Loco of Cappadocia, the event was born from a desire to bring light, warmth, and connection to the village, involving residents, shopkeepers, artisans, and young people from the nearby hamlet of Petrella Liri. In a mountain setting often affected by winter depopulation, Presepi nel Borgo restores life and conviviality to the streets of Cappadocia, establishing itself as one of the most beloved Christmas events in the Marsica region. Admission is free.
The dates and program for the 2026 edition of Presepi nel Borgo in Cappadocia have not yet been announced. While awaiting official communications from the Pro Loco, the event is expected to take place during the Christmas period, featuring the traditional route through the village cellars and alleys, the craft market, tastings, and the competition for the best nativity scene.
Cappadocia is located in the province of L'Aquila, in the upper Roveto Valley near the border with Lazio. By car, it can be reached via the A24/A25 motorway (Avezzano or Carsoli exits), continuing along the provincial roads of the Marsica region.
Admission is free. Opening hours, typically from late morning to late afternoon, are announced annually by the Pro Loco on their local channels.
