Christmas among Roman ruins at the foot of Mount Velino

Few places in Abruzzo can capture the Christmas spirit quite like Alba Fucens, the ancient Roman colony located in the municipality of Massa d'Albe, in the province of L'Aquila, at the foot of Mount Velino. It is here, among paved streets, the amphitheatre, and millenary ruins, that the Pro Loco Alba Fucens organizes its Christmas Markets every Decemberโan event that has become a highly anticipated tradition in the Marsica region.
Stepping into the markets means strolling through soft lights, wooden chalets, and stalls as Christmas carols fill the air: a setting where the magic of the holidays intertwines with the allure of history. The event is designed for everyone, adults and children alike, and spans several days packed with activities.
The heart of the markets lies with the artisans, hobbyists, creative artists, and local food producers who showcase handmade creations, gift ideas, and regional specialties. The Pro Loco's food stands make the visit even more delicious, offering authentic Abruzzese flavors: arrosticini, mulled wine, hot chocolate, themed ferratelle, and many other warm treats perfect for winter days.
The market program alternates between live music and performances: choirs and music schools with Christmas repertoires, street performers featuring jugglers, stilt walkers, acrobats, fire shows, and puppet theater, as well as folk groups reviving traditional Marsican music with accordions and local songs.
One of the most precious aspects of the Alba Fucens Christmas Markets is the opportunity to explore the archaeological site with tours led by professional guides. It is a journey through the ancient Roman city, the amphitheatre, and the charming Church of San Pietro in Albe, combining festive fun with a true immersion into the history of inland Abruzzo.
Supported by local municipalities, the markets serve as a showcase for Alba Fucens and the Marsica region during the holiday season, attracting visitors from across the province of L'Aquila and beyond. It is an event that unites tradition, community, and the unique beauty of one of Abruzzo's most fascinating archaeological sites.
The dates for the 2026 edition of the Alba Fucens Christmas Markets have not yet been announced. In previous years, the event, organized by the Pro Loco Alba Fucens, took place during the first weekend of December, coinciding with the Immaculate Conception holiday (December 8th), featuring crafts, Marsican gastronomy, shows, and guided tours of the archaeological site. The detailed program and official dates will be communicated by the organizers in the months leading up to the event.
