Five days of Cilento tradition in Cannalonga, featuring boiled goat, rustic food stalls, and folk music
The Frecagnola Fair is one of the most ancient and iconic events in the entire Cilento region. It is held in Cannalonga, a village of just under a thousand inhabitants nestled at an altitude of 570 meters in the heart of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, in the province of Salerno, Campania. Its roots lie in the ancient Saint Lucy market, documented as early as 1452 and traditionally held around December 12th and 13th. The event dates back to 1459 and, over the centuries, shifted to September while preserving its original nature as a great market fair.
The name is one of the most curious in the Italian festival scene: it derives from a local dialect term related to being tricked, reflecting the genuine risk of being swindled during negotiations. At the fair, goats and livestock were primarily traded, and the bargaining between shepherds and merchants was a true art form made of glances, visual estimates, silences, and handshakes. That game of mutual cunning gave the event its name, which still maintains an ironic and authentically popular tone today.
The signature dish is boiled goat, known in dialect as crapa vudduta: meat slow-cooked in large pots, seasoned with mountain herbs, and served with potatoes. It is a direct memory of the livestock market: once deals were closed, a goat would be sacrificed, boiled on the spot, and consumed together under the branches. Alongside the goat, the tables offer the best of simple, honest Cilento cuisine, from goat and sheep cheeses to handmade fusilli, wild field greens, and homemade desserts, all accompanied by local wines.
The operational heart of the fair are the baracche: structures made of wood and branches set up along the village streets, where the families of Cannalonga cook and serve non-stop for all five days. Surrounding them are stalls selling handicrafts and typical products, with traditional Cilento trades still well represented.
In the evening, Cannalonga changes pace. On the stage in Piazza del Popolo, folk, ethnic, and traditional music groups take turns, usually starting in the late hours, while itinerant bands with accordions, tambourines, and folk guitars roam the alleys. It is tradition for the younger crowd to wait for dawn in the square to the sound of Cilento tarantellas: a ritual renewed every end of summer that explains much of the Frecagnola's appeal, attracting tens of thousands of visitors over the five days.
The artistic direction is now explicitly identity-focused: following citizen protests in 2024, the Fair Board abandoned DJ sets and electronic music to return the programming entirely to the folk repertoire of Cilento.
Outside of the fair days, Cannalonga remains a small center in the municipality of the same name worth exploring: the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, the Ducal Palace linked to the Falletti linked to the Falletti and Mogrovejo families, and the cult of Saint Turibio de Mogrovejo, the town's patron saint and a figure of international historical significance, tell a long and surprising story for a village of this size. Surrounding it are the trails of the National Park, the Vallo di Diano, and, just over half an hour's drive away, the Cilento coast with Ascea, Pisciotta, and Velia.
The Frecagnola Fair spans five days, from Wednesday to Sunday, in the week culminating in the second Sunday of September. It is one of the few occasions where a gastronomic and musical event still coincides, literally, with the commercial fair that generated it: and it is this continuity, more than the scenery, that makes it an appointment unlike any other festival in Campania.
For 2026, the Frecagnola Fair confirms its traditional timing: five days, from Wednesday, September 9 to Sunday, September 13, 2026, in the week culminating in the second Sunday of the month. The dates have been indicated by the Frecagnola Fair Board and included in the Cilento festival calendars for summer 2026.
As every year, the village of Cannalonga, in the province of Salerno, prepares to welcome tens of thousands of visitors among food stalls, craft booths, and typical product stands. The signature dish remains boiled goat, served with potatoes according to the recipe that descends directly from the ancient livestock market.
The musical programming will continue to focus exclusively on the folk and traditional repertoire of Cilento: a choice consolidated since 2024, when the Fair Board renounced DJ sets and electronic music to meet citizens' requests to preserve the event's identity.
As this is an upcoming edition, it is advisable to check times, artists, and logistical details on the official channels of the fair before traveling.
The 2026 edition is confirmed in Cannalonga from September 9 to 13, 2026. The detailed evening-by-evening program has not yet been published: the Fair Board usually releases it in the weeks immediately preceding the event through its official channels.
The structure of the event, unchanged for years, includes:
During the day, the calendar is completed with painting and photography exhibitions, show cooking dedicated to Cilento cuisine, and in-depth sessions on local history, uses, and customs.
