A weekend dedicated to bread and Ladin traditions among the mountain huts of the La Crusc area
The Festa dl pan - Bread Festival is a food and wine event held every year in early September in the municipality of Badia (Abtei), in Alta Badia, in the province of Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige. For an entire weekend, the event brings to life the mountain huts and alpine pastures of the picturesque La Crusc - Santa Croce area, at the foot of the Sasso di Santa Croce, paying homage to one of the simplest yet most precious staples of Alpine tradition: bread.
More than just a festival, Festa dl pan is a journey of discovery into the Ladin culture of Val Badia. Here, bread is not just daily sustenance but a symbol of community, shared labor, and a connection to the mountain land. Stories, legends, and techniques passed down through generations revolve around its preparation, coming back to life during the festival among the farmsteads and mountain huts of the plateau.
The event spans three days, each with its own unique character:
The event involves the mountain huts and businesses of the La Crusc - Santa Croce area, including the La Crusc Mountain Hut, Nagler, Lé, Ütia L'Tamá, Ranch da André, and the Alfarëi farm. Everything takes place in one of the most fascinating settings in the Dolomites, dominated by the Sas dla Crusc and the Santa Croce sanctuary, a place of pilgrimage consecrated in 1484 and one of the oldest sacred sites in the valley.
Festa dl pan is an invitation to slow down, walk through the pastures and forests of Alta Badia, and rediscover the authentic taste of simple things. It is an ideal occasion for families, hikers, and food lovers who wish to learn about Ladin traditions and the culinary heritage of Val Badia up close. The event takes place in all weather conditions.
The Festa dl pan 2026 will be held from Friday, September 4 to Sunday, September 6 among the mountain huts of the La Crusc - Santa Croce area, above Badia. The program follows the usual rhythm of the event: Friday, September 4 (2:00 PM - 5:00 PM) the guided hike 'The Bread Trail, from field to oven', with a visit to a traditional mill and oven; Saturday, September 5 (6:00 PM - 8:00 PM) the 'Bread, traditions, and legends' evening on the terrace of the Ütia L'Tamá, with stories, folk songs, and an aperitif; Sunday, September 6 (11:00 AM - 4:30 PM) the festival day with traditional dishes, music, meetings, and workshops for children and adults among the mountain huts and farmsteads of the plateau.
Badia can be reached via the SS244 valley road. From there, continue along the San Linert road to the parking lot of the La Crusc cable car, which conveniently takes you up to the Santa Croce area.
Participation in the festival is free. For the Friday guided hike (The Bread Trail), free registration is required at the Alta Badia tourist offices.
