The traditional cattle drive from Brunst mountain pasture to Valdaora di Sopra
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Brunschta Almabtrieb, or the cattle drive from the Brunst pasture, is one of the most cherished autumn events in Valdaora (Olang), a small town in the Puster Valley, in the province of Bolzano, South Tyrol. As the alpine grazing season ends, the herds that spent the summer on the Brunst pastures return to the valley: the cows are adorned with flower crowns, conifer branches, and traditional bells, following a rural custom passed down through generations across South Tyrol.
The return of the herds is not just an agricultural task, but a true village celebration. The parade travels along Bödenstraße and reaches the center of Valdaora di Sopra (Oberolang), accompanied by the enthusiasm of locals and visitors alike. It is a unique opportunity to experience the rural culture of the South Tyrolean valleys, where the transhumance (known in German as Almabtrieb) has marked the rhythm of the seasons for centuries.
After the cows arrive, the day continues with live music, traditional South Tyrolean brass bands, and a convivial atmosphere. Local culinary specialties and typical drinks are always on offer, while the afternoon features a raffle with exciting prizes. The event is organized by the Bauernjugend Olang, the local young farmers' association, and captures the genuine spirit of mountain farming festivals.
For those visiting the Puster Valley at the end of summer, the Brunschta Almabtrieb offers an immersive look into the life and traditions of the alpine communities of Valdaora. It is a free, family-friendly event that blends folklore, gastronomy, and the deep bond between mountain people and their livestock.
The 2026 edition of the Brunschta Almabtrieb in Valdaora (Olang), Puster Valley, does not yet have an official date: the Bauernjugend Olang usually announces the program in the weeks leading up to the event. As per tradition, the transhumance from the Brunst pasture is expected to take place in September, featuring the return of the decorated cows to Valdaora di Sopra, live music, South Tyrolean specialties, and the usual raffle. We recommend following the social media channels of the Bauernjugend Olang for the date and program as soon as they are published.
The transhumance begins at the sports field in Valdaora di Sopra (Oberolang), in the municipality of Valdaora, Puster Valley (Province of Bolzano). The parade continues along Bödenstraße to the village center.
Valdaora is accessible by car via the Puster Valley road (SS49). The Valdaora-Anterselva train station is served by the Fortezza-San Candido line. Local bus connections are available during summer and autumn.
The event is free. Info: Bauernjugend Olang, tel. +39 348 834 3438, [email protected].
