The Villnösser Brillenschaf lamb culinary weeks in Val di Funes
The Lammwochen vom Villnösser Brillenschaf are the culinary weeks that bring Val di Funes to life every autumn, in the municipality of Funes/Villnöß, in the province of Bolzano (South Tyrol). For about ten days, the valley's restaurants, hotels, and mountain farms serve creative specialties featuring meat from the Villnösser Brillenschaf, the oldest sheep breed in South Tyrol, recognized as a Slow Food Presidium since 2011.
The sheep's name comes from the characteristic dark pigmentation around its eyes, which resembles a pair of glasses (Brille in German). This breed dates back to the 18th century, a cross between the Bergamasca and the Padua sheep; it was long at risk of extinction and is now protected through organized breeding. Its meat is prized for being tender, fine-fibered, and delicate, while its soft, elastic wool is handcrafted. The event was created specifically to promote this farming tradition and support the valley's breeders.
During the culinary weeks, chefs at participating venues interpret lamb according to the Slow Food philosophy, ranging from traditional South Tyrolean recipes to more creative proposals. Venues that have participated over the years include the Gasthof Restaurant Teiser Stern, the Hotel Restaurant Kabis, the Pizzeria Viel Nois, and various mountain huts and alpine dairies, alongside "friend" restaurants scattered throughout South Tyrol.
The backdrop is the spectacular Puez-Odle Nature Park, with the picturesque village of Santa Maddalena and the spires of the Odle mountains in the background. The side program includes guided hikes to discover mountain agriculture and farmers' customs, as well as special afternoons for families at the Nature Park Visitor Center, where you can learn to work with the wool of this prized breed. It is a perfect opportunity to experience Val di Funes in autumn, combining hiking, rural culture, and fine dining.
The Lammwochen vom Villnösser Brillenschaf 2026 will take place from October 9 to 18, 2026, in Val di Funes (municipality of Funes/Villnöß, province of Bolzano). Once again this year, the valley's restaurants and "friend" venues throughout South Tyrol will offer specialties featuring meat from the Villnösser Brillenschaf, South Tyrol's oldest sheep breed and a Slow Food Presidium.
The program includes, in addition to culinary offerings at participating restaurants, alpine-style aperitifs, guided themed hikes, and afternoons dedicated to wool crafting. The complete list of participating venues and side events for the 2026 edition will be announced by the Val di Funes Tourist Association.
Val di Funes can be reached by car from the Chiusa/Val Gardena exit of the A22 Brenner motorway, then following signs for Funes/Villnöß. By train, the nearest station is Chiusa (Klausen), which is connected to Funes by local bus lines.
Lamb dishes featuring Brillenschaf meat are served at participating restaurants: direct booking with the venues is recommended. An updated list of restaurants and side events is available from the Val di Funes Tourist Association.
