The traditional village festival of Luson in the Isarco Valley

The Lüsner Kirchtag—known in the local South Tyrolean dialect as Lissna Kirchta—is the most cherished village festival in Luson/Lüsen, a mountain hamlet in the Isarco Valley, in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano (South Tyrol). Every year, on a weekend in September, the town center transforms, experiencing what locals call an Ausnahmezustand, a state of festive exception that involves the entire community.
The Kirchtag has its roots in the ancient South Tyrolean tradition of the patronal feast linked to the village church, a moment when the community gathers to celebrate its customs. In Luson, the event is carried forward by local associations (Vereine), which collaborate on the organization under the motto "Tradition weiterleben"—keeping tradition alive. It is a festival with an authentic character, far from large-scale tourist events, where the protagonists are the inhabitants themselves.
The festival program revolves around several key moments that define its identity:
The Lüsner Kirchtag is also designed for the little ones: during the festival, a climbing wall and a bouncy castle are set up so that children can have fun while adults participate in the festivities. This family-friendly dimension makes the festival an event for all ages.
Nestled on a sunny plateau in the Isarco Valley, above Bressanone, the town of Luson is a popular destination for hiking and its proximity to the Dolomites. The September festival, with the fresh air of early autumn, represents one of the best times to discover South Tyrolean hospitality and the identity of this bilingual town in South Tyrol.
At the moment, the official dates for the 2026 edition of the Lüsner Kirchtag have not yet been published. Following tradition, the Luson festival takes place on a weekend in September in the town center, in the Isarco Valley. The usual program includes live music with various bands, the parade of Luson's associations, stands with typical South Tyrolean cuisine, and activities dedicated to children. Definitive information will be released by the Municipality of Luson and the organizing Vereine in the weeks leading up to the event.
Luson/Lüsen can be reached from the A22 Brenner motorway (Bressanone/Val Pusteria exit) by continuing towards the Luson plateau. The nearest train station is Bressanone, which is connected to the town by local bus lines.
Admission to the festival is free, unless otherwise indicated. The festival takes place in the town center on a weekend in September.
