A tradition brought back to life

The Festa della Segale (Rye Festival) in Rhêmes-Saint-Georges, a municipality in the Province of Aosta in the Valle di Rhêmes, celebrates one of the most deeply rooted traditions of Alpine culture: the cultivation of rye and the baking of black bread in the communal oven of Vieux. In the past, in mountain villages, bread was baked only a few times a year in the communal oven, and this festival revives the ancient gestures before the public.

Bread, flavours, and culture

The heart of the day is traditional bread-making: at the oven in the hamlet of Vieux, you can witness the baking of rye bread and purchase it fresh from the oven. Alongside the bread, local producers showcase their excellence with the quality brand of the Gran Paradiso National Park — cheeses, honey, vegetables, and wines — a testament to sustainable agriculture in the protected area. The guided hikes "on the rye trails" allow you to discover the agricultural landscape and meet the producers, while in-depth sessions tell the story of cereals in nutrition.
