The black rye bread festival at the communal oven in Norat, Introd
The Fiha di Pan Nir — the black bread festival — is one of the most cherished gastronomic traditions in the municipality of Introd, in the Province of Aosta, at the entrance to the Gran Paradiso valleys. It takes place in the hamlet of Norat, around the communal oven, where for an entire day the pan ner, the traditional black rye bread of the Alps, is baked.
From the morning, the oven is lit, and the baking of the black bread begins: a dough in which rye flour must be predominant, at least 60% of the total. It is an ancient ritual that once marked the life of Alpine communities, when bread was baked only once a year and preserved for the months to come. In the evening, the festival moves to the park of Introd Castle, with a dinner featuring local products and the seuppa de pan ner, the traditional Aosta Valley soup made with black bread, cheese, and cabbage.
Organised by the Municipality of Introd, the Fiha di Pan Nir is a festival that blends taste, memory, and conviviality. Not to be confused with the broader cross-border circuit Lo Pan Ner – I pani delle Alpi, held in October: in Introd, the tradition of black bread is revived on both occasions, a sign of how deeply rooted this product is in the identity of the town and the entire region.
The Fiha di Pan Nir 2026 is expected in the first ten days of August, in line with tradition: the 2025 edition took place on Friday, August 8th. The exact date for 2026 has not yet been published at the time of writing this sheet. The event, organised by the Municipality of Introd, takes place every year in the hamlet of Norat and follows a consolidated structure: lighting of the communal oven in the morning and baking of black bread throughout the day, followed in the evening by dinner in the park of Introd Castle with local products and 'seuppa de pan ner'.
The programme and date for the 2026 edition have not yet been published. The day typically follows this structure, based on previous editions:
