About Festa de Brusign

Every January 31st, the community of Castel Condino in the Chiese Valley gathers for the Festa de Brusign, a commemoration of the devastating fire that destroyed much of the village in 1884. Organized by the local Pro Loco, the day blends solemn remembrance with the convivial spirit of this Trentino mountain village, featuring a memorial mass, cultural events, and a traditional dinner of canederli. It is a tradition upheld for over 140 years, renewing the collective memory and bonds of this small mountain community each winter.

A tragedy turned into shared memory

The Festa de Brusign—known in the local dialect as "i Brusin" (the burnt ones)—is the annual commemoration through which the municipality of Castel Condino, a small village in the Chiese Valley in Trentino-Alto Adige, remembers one of the most dramatic episodes in its history. On January 31, 1884, a fire, accidentally started by two children playing with fire among hay and straw, spread with terrifying speed through the tightly packed houses. Within hours, the flames destroyed most of the village: over one hundred homes were lost, and hundreds of families were left homeless. Only a few houses in the Nose area, the church, the bell tower, and the rectory were spared.

From a solemn vow to a community festival

Following the catastrophe, the community decided to mark the anniversary of the fire every year on January 31st with a solemn memorial mass for the deceased. From that promise, the tradition known today as the Festa de Brusign was born. Over time, the moment of reflection has merged with social conviviality, transforming the commemoration into a true village festival that brings the entire community together.

How it is celebrated today

The day is organized by the Pro Loco of Castel Condino and typically takes place between the Church of San Giorgio—one of the few buildings that survived the 1884 fire—and other local gathering spots. The program usually includes:

  • a memorial mass for the victims, attended by municipal authorities and the volunteer fire brigade;
  • a cultural event, such as a book presentation or a meeting with an author;
  • the traditional community dinner featuring canederli, prepared by the Pro Loco volunteers.

A small village, a great tradition

At the time of the fire, Castel Condino had over a thousand inhabitants; today, only a few hundred remain. This is why the Festa de Brusign holds such strong identity value: by remembering a tragic event, the citizens strengthen their collective memory and community spirit year after year, passing the tradition down through generations. For those visiting Trentino in winter, it is an authentic opportunity to discover a mountain community and its roots.
