About Cimego Carosello

In the heart of the Chiese Valley, the medieval village of Quartinago transforms every Advent into a charming carousel of lights, music, and flavors. "Carosello - Cimego Christmas Market" in Borgo Chiese (Trentino-Alto Adige) brings to life heated hallways, courtyards, cellars, and barns with over forty stalls featuring mountain crafts and gastronomy. The event's hallmark is the famous Cimego witches, the stars of the Grand Witches' Dance around the bonfires. An intimate, authentic atmosphere to rediscover the most genuine Alpine traditions.

A Christmas market in the village of witches

Carosello - Cimego Christmas Market is one of the most evocative Christmas events in Trentino-Alto Adige. It takes place in the small medieval village of Quartinago, a hamlet of Cimego in the municipality of Borgo Chiese (Trento province), nestled in the Chiese Valley. For several weekends during Advent, the ancient stone houses, hallways, courtyards, cellars, and heated barns light up with festive decorations, music, and aromas, recreating the intimate, welcoming atmosphere that only Christmas can provide.

The witches of Cimego

The central theme of the event is the witches of Cimego, figures linked to the witchcraft trials that, according to tradition, took place in the valley during the Middle Ages. The "wise" women who once gathered in the village have become the symbol of the initiative today. The most anticipated and evocative moment is the Grand Witches' Dance, a ritual dance around bonfires, amidst fire, music, and shadows, held during the event days.

Crafts and traditions

Along the village streets, there are over forty stalls showcasing the best of handmade goods: paintings, sculptures, decorations, and objects crafted by professional artisans and hobbyists, as well as mountain cheeses, cured meats, honey, jams, medicinal herbs, ceramics, and knitwear. There is no shortage of shows, workshops, and demonstrations of ancient crafts, such as woodworking and blacksmithing, along with activities designed for both adults and children.

The flavors of the Chiese Valley

Gastronomy takes center stage with mountain cuisine dishes: Polenta Macafana, prepared with the renowned yellow flour from Storo, canederli (bread dumplings), strangolapreti (spinach gnocchi), potato tortel, mountain cheeses, and local specialties. The village's musical tradition is upheld by the Cimego Band, whose history dates back to 1850—over 150 years of passion.

An authentic Christmas experience

Strolling through the alleys of Quartinago during Carosello means immersing yourself in a timeless atmosphere, far from the large tourist markets and close to the truest soul of Trentino. The event is promoted by Eventi Valle del Chiese APS and is an unmissable appointment for those seeking the Christmas spirit of small Alpine communities.
