The festival celebrating the return of livestock from mountain pastures on the Boniprati Plateau
The Desmalgada is one of the most cherished rural traditions in the Chiese Valley, held every September on the Boniprati Plateau, a high-altitude plain reached by winding roads above the village of Castel Condino, in the heart of Trentino-Alto Adige. The event celebrates the desmontegada, the ancient ritual of bringing livestock down from mountain pastures to the valley floor at the end of the summer season.
The highlight of the event is the livestock parade: cows, goats, donkeys, and horses descend from the high pastures adorned with flowers and cowbells, accompanied by local brass bands. The descent of the animals, with the deep resonance of bells echoing across the plateau, draws thousands of visitors each year and captures the authentic atmosphere of alpine life. The parade is the centerpiece of a day filled with events dedicated to rural life, milk, and cheeses produced in the surrounding mountain dairies.
The Desmalgada is designed with families in mind: children can try their hand at milking cows and learn how to make cheese at the Caserada dei Popi, a traditional cheesemaking workshop that recreates the techniques of ancient dairymen. The festival also features an educational farm, rural games among hay bales, and the sale of local products from the valley, particularly alpine cheeses and dairy goods. Those who enjoy hiking can participate in a historical trek to discover the Boniprati Plateau, exploring both its nature and local heritage.
The event takes place in the Municipality of Castel Condino, in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige), bordering the municipality of Pieve di Bono-Prezzo. It is organized by the Madonna di Campiglio Pinzolo Val Rendena Tourist Board with the involvement of local communities, associations, and the brass bands of the Chiese Valley. Established in 2015, the Desmalgada has become one of the most popular 'desmontegada' events in western Trentino.
The 2026 Desmalgada will take place on Sunday, September 13, 2026, on the Boniprati Plateau, above Castel Condino, in the Chiese Valley area (Trentino-Alto Adige). As per tradition, the festival will celebrate the 'desmontegada' with a parade of animals from the high pastures, musical accompaniment by local brass bands, family activities, and tastings of alpine cheeses and local products.
At the time of this announcement, the detailed program for the 2026 edition is being finalized: schedules, shuttle services, and specific activities will be communicated by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
The Boniprati Plateau can be reached from Castel Condino (TN) by taking a mountain road that climbs for about five kilometers past the village. Private cars can only access Boniprati from the Prezzo side.
On the day of the festival, a shuttle service operates from the former Vela square (Creto fire station). Estimated cost: adults 5.00 euros, children under 12 free.
