The festival celebrating the return of livestock from alpine pastures in Valle del Chiese
The Desmalgada di Boniprati is one of the most popular 'desmontegade' (livestock return festivals) in Trentino: a celebration marking the return of cattle from high-altitude pastures at the end of summer. It takes place on the Boniprati Plateau, above the municipality of Pieve di Bono-Prezzo and Castel Condino, in the Valle del Chiese, in the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Established in 2015 by the Comitato La Desmalgada in collaboration with local partners, the event has grown rapidly to attract thousands of visitors, becoming a symbolic appointment for the valley's farming and livestock traditions.
The highlight is the livestock parade: cows, goats, donkeys, and horses descend from the pastures adorned with flowers, cowbells, and traditional ornaments, accompanied by local brass bands. It is the heart of the 'desmontegada', an ancient ritual marking the end of the grazing season and the return of the animals to the valley, blending celebration with the deep emotions of the local community.
The Desmalgada is also a culinary celebration. Throughout the plateau, there are tastings and sales of local products — alpine cheeses, cured meats, and Valle del Chiese specialties — while the midday lunch features traditional dishes such as polenta carbonera, cabbage, and alpine cheese. Mountain huts and lodges also offer menus dedicated to rural traditions.
There is plenty of space for the little ones. With the Caserada dei Popi, children can try their hand at milking and cheese-making, taking home a small souvenir and a Desmalgada apron. Team games in the hay, a petting farm, and workshops complete a program designed to bring children closer to the mountain farming lifestyle.
Nestled in the meadows and forests of the plateau, just over an hour from Trento, the Desmalgada combines alpine landscapes, rural culture, and conviviality. It is an authentic day to discover the mountain soul of the Valle del Chiese and the traditions of Trentino's livestock farming, amidst the sound of cowbells, brass bands, and the scent of mountain pastures.
The 2026 edition of the Desmalgada di Boniprati is scheduled for Sunday, September 13, 2026, on the Boniprati Plateau, in the municipality of Pieve di Bono-Prezzo (Valle del Chiese, Trentino). This marks the tenth edition of the event organized by the Comitato La Desmalgada.
As per tradition, the day will revolve around the livestock parade descending from the pastures, tastings of local valley products, and activities for families and children. The detailed program with times and menus is still being defined and will be published by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
The Boniprati Plateau is located above Pieve di Bono-Prezzo and Castel Condino, in the Valle del Chiese, reachable in just over an hour by car from Trento. Access by car is via the Prezzo side; a shuttle service is generally available during the event days.
The event is family-friendly: there are dedicated areas for children, a nursing area, and specific facilities. Dogs are allowed on a leash. Comfortable clothing suitable for the mountains is recommended. Lunches are available for purchase at the plateau's refreshment points; it is advisable to arrive early to enjoy the livestock parade.
