The Ferragosto festival in the heart of Carnia, with frico and dancing evenings
When Ferragosto arrives, Moggio Udinese gathers around Casa San Carlo, in the hamlet of Moggio di Sopra, to bring the Fieste dal Frico to life. It's one of those village festivals that needs no introduction in Carnia: you eat, you dance, and you spend time together for days, with the mountains of Val Fella as a backdrop.
The name says it all. Frico — the Montasio cheese pancake, sometimes enriched with potatoes and onion — is the undisputed king of the food stalls. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, it's the dish that best tells the story of Friulian peasant cuisine, and here it's prepared according to tradition, accompanied by polenta and local wines.
Every evening, the marquee comes alive with dance orchestras: ballroom dancing, group dances, and music for all ages, because in Moggio, the festival is something that unites grandparents and grandchildren. Alongside the music, there's a charity raffle, bouncy castles and entertainment for children, stalls, and exhibitions. A simple and proven program, carefully crafted by the volunteers of Pro Loco Moggese (local association) together with the Parish and the Municipality of Moggio Udinese.
Moggio Udinese, in the province of Udine, is a perched village where Val Fella meets Canal del Ferro, dominated by the ancient Benedictine abbey. Coming here for Ferragosto means combining the festival with a discovery of the area: the trails of the Julian Alps, the Park of the Julian Prealps, and the flavors of a land that has made conviviality a true art.
In 2026 too, the Fieste dal Frico will liven up Moggio di Sopra around Ferragosto, following the proven formula of recent editions: a full week of celebration, with food stalls opening in the early afternoon and musical evenings until late.
The program will again feature frico in all its variations, accompanied by traditional Carnian dishes, dance orchestras, a charity raffle, and entertainment for the little ones.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be announced by Pro Loco Moggese in the coming weeks. Based on previous editions, the structure includes:
