The great Ferragosto festival of Valcanale, in the heart of the land of three borders
There is a corner of Italy where in a few kilometers you can hear Italian, German, and Slovenian spoken, and where the Alps form the border between three nations. This is the Tarvisiano area, and every August its capital, Tarvisio, celebrates this unique identity with Alpenfest: the most important and attended summer event in Valcanale.
Organized by the Municipality of Tarvisio with the Pro Loco association, Alpenfest showcases the culture of the land of three borders—Italy, Austria, and Slovenia—through a grand popular festival of music, flavors, and traditions. Piazza Unità and the town's streets fill with colors, costumes, and aromas for four days in mid-August.
The heart of the event is the international folk parade: groups from the valley, the region, and neighboring territories parade in traditional Alpine costume, accompanied by horse-drawn carriages and children, along Via Roma. A spectacle of identity and belonging that kicks off the festival days.
Alpenfest is also an opportunity to explore one of Friuli's most fascinating territories: from the Fusine Lakes to Mount Lussari, from the Tarvisio Forest to the trails of Valcanale. An authentic mountain destination, straddling the Julian and Carnic Alps.
The 2026 edition of Alpenfest will liven up Tarvisio from August 13 to 16. The highlight will be the grand traditional costume parade on Thursday, August 13, featuring folk groups from the valley, the region, and neighboring countries. Throughout the festival, the town center will be filled with food and wine stalls dedicated to Alpine specialties, local craft markets, and numerous musical events.
