The oldest and most famous Sicilian cart parade, dating back to 1737
In the heart of Sicily, in Campobello di Licata (Agrigento), the Feast of the Madonna dell'Aiuto is the most anticipated event of the summer. Its beating heart is La Rietina, widely considered the oldest and most famous Sicilian cart parade on the entire island. The tradition dates back to 1737: ever since, during the celebration of the Madonna dell'Aiuto, Sicilian carts have processed through the town streets in a popular ritual that blends religious devotion, rural identity, and spectacle.
Over sixty Sicilian carts, authentic masterpieces of craftsmanship created over months by woodcarvers, blacksmiths, sculptors, and painters, parade richly decorated according to the island's ancient traditions. They are pulled by magnificent draft horses—the true protagonists of the event—ranging from the Italian agricultural horse to the French Breton and the imposing Percheron, all admired for their coat colors and sumptuous harnesses. The procession is accompanied by folk groups, with traditional music and costumes bringing the entire route to life.
The carts gather in the afternoon on via Luigi Giglia, where the parade begins. The procession winds through numerous streets in the center of Campobello di Licata, including via Vittorio Emanuele, piazza della Vittoria, via Garibaldi, via Marconi, and piazza XX Settembre, welcomed by throngs of spectators. It is estimated that the event draws around thirty thousand people each year, including residents, returning emigrants, and tourists.
At the end of the parade, the most poignant moment of devotion takes place: the auction of the Bannera, the flag of the Madonna dell'Aiuto. The auction is open to all those who have made a vow to the Madonna, and the entire proceeds are donated to the Mother Church of Campobello di Licata. The religious festival also includes vespers, a solemn mass, a procession in honor of the Madonna dell'Aiuto, and the traditional fireworks that close the festivities.
La Rietina is more than just a village festival: it is a pillar of Sicilian identity. The municipal administration has requested its inclusion in the regional circuit of events and recognition as intangible cultural heritage, a testament to the value of a tradition that, after nearly three centuries, continues to unite faith, folklore, and rural memory.
For 2026, La Rietina is expected on Monday, August 17, following the tradition that sets the event on the Monday of the week after Ferragosto. The parade of Sicilian carts and draft horses for the Feast of the Madonna dell'Aiuto will thus be renewed, with a gathering on via Luigi Giglia, the accompaniment of folk groups, and, at the end, the auction of the Bannera for the benefit of the Mother Church.
Precise times and the full program for the 2026 edition will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
La Rietina takes place every year on the Monday of the week following Ferragosto (August 15th), as part of the Feast of the Madonna dell'Aiuto. The gathering of the carts is scheduled for the afternoon, starting from via Luigi Giglia.
Campobello di Licata is located in the Agrigento hinterland. By car, it can be reached via the SS115 and SS123; the nearest airports are Palermo and Catania, both about two hours away. The local train station is served by the Agrigento-Caltanissetta line.
During the parade, the historic center is closed to traffic: it is advisable to arrive early and park on the outskirts. The event is free and takes place outdoors.
