A centenary festival in the heart of Sicily

For over a century, the Saint Joseph Festival has been the most anticipated and identity-defining event in Favara, a populous town in the Agrigento hinterland. Every year, between late August and early September, the entire community gathers around its patron saint in a celebration that weaves together faith, memory, and popular identity. It is a festival that also draws back many expatriate Favaresi, who return home to relive days filled with emotion alongside family and lifelong friends.

Devotion and religious rites

The spiritual heart of the festival is the novena, which prepares the community for the saint's solemnity with daily celebrations at the Church of the Rosary, where the statue of Saint Joseph is kept. The day of the feast is entirely dedicated to devotion: from the first Holy Masses at dawn to the solemn evening Eucharistic Concelebration, followed by the evocative procession of the statue through the city streets, accompanied by marching bands and the Hymn to Saint Joseph.

Saint Joseph soups and popular traditions

Among the most beloved rites are the famous Saint Joseph soups, prepared and shared in the historic neighborhoods during the processions: a gesture of hospitality and solidarity rooted in the most authentic Sicilian peasant culture. Another spectacular moment is the wheat harvest with harnessed horses, an ancient re-enactment of threshing that colors the streets of Favara with richly decorated Sicilian carts and folk parades.
