The celebration of Milena's signature dish in the heart of Sicily

The 'Mbriulata Festival is the most anticipated summer event in Milena, a small town in the Province of Caltanissetta perched at an altitude of about 460 meters in the heart of central Sicily. Every year, traditionally on the second Friday of August, the town's streets—specifically Piazza Garibaldi and Via Nazionale—transform into a vibrant festival space where the Pro Loco of Milena, in collaboration with the municipality, offers visitors the chance to taste the area's signature dish.
The 'mbriulata is a savory bread dough rolled out with a sagnaturi (a traditional rolling pin), spiraled, and stuffed with olives, potatoes, cheese (the local tuma), and minced pork. Historically, women prepared it as a complete meal for family members working in the fields all day: it was a humble, nutritious, and portable food. Today, the 'mbriulata is recognized as one of the traditional agri-food products of the Sicily Region and has become an ambassador of Milena's peasant cuisine.
During the evening, which kicks off at dusk, stalls set up along the route offer generous portions of 'mbriulata paired with local wines. The festival is more than just a culinary event: the streets come alive with Sicilian folk music groups, entertainment, and a convivial atmosphere that draws thousands of people every summer, including former residents and tourists eager to discover an authentic corner of the Sicilian hinterland.
Founded in the late nineties, the festival has surpassed twenty-five editions and established itself as one of the most representative gastronomic events in central Sicily. The Milena 'mbriulata has even crossed regional and national borders, carrying the name of Milena beyond the island and strengthening the community's bond with its culinary identity.
Visiting the 'Mbriulata Festival is also an opportunity to discover Milena and the hilly landscape of the Province of Caltanissetta, characterized by ancient farmhouses (the distinctive robbe), olive groves, and enduring rural traditions. The festival represents the time of year when the entire town gathers to share its history through taste.
The 2026 edition of the 'Mbriulata Festival in Milena (CL) is expected, as every year, in August. At the moment, the Pro Loco of Milena has not yet released the official date or the detailed program. Based on tradition, the event takes place on the second Friday of August in the town's historic center, with tastings of 'mbriulata, local wines, and Sicilian folk music performances. It is recommended to check the official Pro Loco channels for updates.
