In the heart of summer, when the Agrigento sun warms the countryside between Joppolo Giancaxio and the Valley of the Temples, the small municipality in the province of Agrigento celebrates one of its most cherished anniversaries: the Feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, known to all locals by the affectionate dialect name "la Fuguredda" (the little figure). It is an event that every year, on the last Sunday of July, brings together residents, returning emigrants, and visitors around an ancient rite made of processions, songs, and devotion.
Tradition tells that the statue of the Madonna was found at sea, near Porto Empedocle, and was transported on a cart towards Joppolo. However, upon reaching the gates of the town, the horses stopped suddenly and refused to continue. At that precise point, considered by the faithful a sign of divine will, a small countryside chapel was built: it is here, in the small church of the Fuguredda, that the statue of the Madonna is still kept today. This legend, handed down from generation to generation, gives the festival its intimate and deeply identity-driven character.
The central moment of the festivities is the procession of the statue, which starts from the Fuguredda chapel, on the outskirts of the town, and reaches the Mother Church, dedicated to Saint Francis of Paola, the patron saint of the municipality. The following Sunday, the statue is carried in a solemn pageant through the streets of the historic center before returning to its chapel. Along the route, moments of prayer, Marian songs, and the passage of the statue between the festively decorated houses alternate, in an atmosphere of recollection and participation that involves the entire community.
Joppolo Giancaxio is a small village of just over a thousand inhabitants, founded at the end of the 17th century, nestled in the Agrigento countryside a few kilometers from the famous Valley of the Temples. The Fuguredda festival is part of a calendar of traditions that marks the life of the town, from Holy Week to the feast of the patron saint Saint Francis of Paola, up to summer festivals like the Yellow Melon Festival. For the people of Joppolo, Our Lady of Perpetual Help is not just a religious appointment, but a way to meet again, rekindle family ties, and preserve the collective memory of a Sicilian community proud of its roots.
The dates and the detailed program for the 2026 edition of the Feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Joppolo Giancaxio have not yet been officially announced. Based on established tradition, the festival should take place around the last Sunday of July, with the customary procession of the statue of the Madonna della Fuguredda from the countryside chapel to the town's Mother Church, in the province of Agrigento.
To find out the updated calendar of religious rites and civil events, it is advisable to consult the channels of the Municipality of Joppolo Giancaxio and the local parish in the weeks preceding the festival.
