The singing competition that keeps the memory of Sommatino's sulfur mines alive

The Solfare Festival is one of the most cherished summer events in Sommatino, a town in the province of Caltanissetta, in the heart of inland Sicily. More than just a singing competition, it is an act of collective memory: a tribute to the difficult and painful world of the sulfur mines that for generations shaped the economy and identity of this region, and in particular to the carusi, the young boys who once worked in the darkness of the mines.
The festival was conceived and is hosted by Leo Virgone, a Sommatino native and grandson of a miner, who serves as the tireless organizer and presenter of the evening. His mission is clear: to keep a history at risk of being forgotten alive while providing a stage for new songwriters, artists, and voices in pop and folk music. On stage, two glowing butterflies symbolically represent the young miners of the past who "continue to shine," bridging the memory of the mines with new generations.
The heart of the event is a singing contest open to participants of all ages, from children to seniors, hailing from all over Sicily. Contestants are divided into categories, with a winner crowned for each at the end of the night. Music thus becomes a bridge between generations and a way to showcase emerging talent from the Sicilian landscape.
The Solfare Festival attracts a large and loyal audience, transforming the square into a vibrant hub of popular celebration. Entertainment, music, and fun intertwine with the rediscovery of the town's mining roots, making the evening a highly anticipated date in the Sommatino summer calendar. The event is supported by the local community and the Municipality of Sommatino.
What makes the Solfare Festival special is its dual soul: on one hand, the tradition and remembrance of the sacrifice of the miners and the carusi; on the other, the discovery of the future through the young talents performing on stage. A balance that makes this competition an authentic experience deeply tied to the identity of mining Sicily.
