About Saint Roch in Butera

Every August, Butera, in the heart of the Caltanissetta province, celebrates its patron saint, Saint Roch, with one of the most heartfelt religious festivals in central Sicily. Featuring a solemn novena, processions of barefoot devotees, the moving ritual of lifting children toward the statue, and a float decorated with basil grown by the faithful, the festival blends popular faith with rural traditions. The celebrations are crowned by the Bread, Pesto, and Basil Festival and parades of horses adorned for the occasion.

A devotion dating back to 1683

The Saint Roch Patronal Feast in Butera is the beating heart of religious and social life in this hilltop village in the province of Caltanissetta, Sicily. Saint Roch was proclaimed patron of the town on April 18, 1683, Easter Sunday, by the will of the Branciforti princes, lords of Butera and devotees of the pilgrim saint from Montpellier. Since then, popular devotion has never waned: in 1983, for the third centenary, the church housing him was elevated to a Sanctuary.

The day of the feast: August 16

The highlight of the festivities is August 16. At dawn, the Sanctuary of Saint Roch opens its doors to welcome the many pilgrims and devotees who come from the city and neighboring villages to offer their vows to the Saint, amidst the sound of blank firecrackers and festive church bells. In the morning, the solemn procession begins, accompanying the patron's statue from the Sanctuary to the Mother Church, winding through the streets of the historic center with a large turnout of barefoot devotees.

The rituals that make the feast unique

During the procession, the ancient ritual of lifting children takes place, where they are held up toward the statue to be placed under the special protection of Saint Roch. The statue is carried on a float entirely adorned with basil, the aromatic plant specifically cultivated by the faithful: at the end of the procession, the basil is distributed to those present as a sign of blessing. In the evening, a second procession returns the sacred effigy to its Sanctuary.

The Bread, Pesto, and Basil Festival

The festivities are not only religious. During the days of the feast, the famous Bread, Pesto, and Basil Festival takes place, an expression of local rural culture: the Saint Roch bread—hardened rolls baked for a long time in the oven—is blessed and distributed, while the basil linked to the Saint's devotion is transformed into a typical pesto, a Sicilian variant distinct from the Genoese one. The program is completed by parades of horses adorned for the feast that bring the town's streets to life.

The novena and the octave

The festival spans the entire month of August. The solemn novena in honor of Saint Roch precedes the patronal day, featuring guest preachers and celebrations, while the octave, on August 23, closes the festivities with a new morning procession to the Mother Church and an evening return to the Sanctuary. For those visiting the Sicily Region in summer, the Saint Roch feast in Butera is an authentic opportunity to immerse oneself in the popular religiosity of the inland Nisseno area.
