The Feast of the Assumption and the summer festival program of the smallest town in the Caltanissetta area
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every August, Bompensiere, a small town of just over six hundred inhabitants in the province of Caltanissetta, is transformed. Nestled at an altitude of 283 meters at the foot of Mount Marrobio, in the heart of inland Sicily, the town celebrates its most heartfelt event, the Feast of the Assumption of Mary on August 15th, around which an entire summer program called Estate Bompensierina unfolds. It is the season when many Bompensiere emigrants return home, and the community reconnects with its main square, its traditions, and its music.
The religious heart of the event is the solemn procession on August 15th, preceded by a three-day preparation period: the statue of the Madonna Assunta is carried through the town along the Via dei Santi, accompanied by the act of consecration to the Virgin. Although the Assumption is not the town's patron saint—a title held by the Most Holy Crucifix, celebrated on the third Sunday of September in the 17th-century Mother Church which houses a painting by Pietro D'Asaro—the mid-August feast has for years been the most attended moment of the Bompensiere summer.
Alongside the religious dimension, the Estate Bompensierina offers a popular and gastronomic program. Among the recurring events, the Guastedda Nadurisa Festival stands out, dedicated to the local focaccia (the people of Bompensiere are also known as "nadurisi"), as well as the street food festival Passiammu e Mangiammu, which brings local flavors to the streets. There is no shortage of folk groups, such as the one from the city of Agrigento, which enliven the evenings with traditional dances and costumes.
The musical side of the summer attracts audiences from the neighboring towns of the Vallone area. In recent editions, the town has hosted concerts by bands known throughout Italy, as well as a Singing Festival that gives space to local voices. The Night of San Lorenzo, with a community dinner and a walk under the stars, and the social gathering dedicated to emigrants complete a calendar designed to keep a small but very active community united.
Visiting Bompensiere during the Estate Bompensierina also means discovering an authentic corner of the province of Caltanissetta: the staircase leading to the Calvary, the rock-cut tombs from the 2nd millennium BC, and the archaeological area of Contrada Raffi with the famous "Lion of Raffi." It is an opportunity to experience inland Sicily far from mass tourism routes, amidst devotion, gastronomy, and village hospitality.
At the moment, the Municipality of Bompensiere has not yet published the official program for the Estate Bompensierina 2026. Following the trend of previous editions, one can expect a calendar of religious, gastronomic, and musical events in the first half of August, with the solemn procession of the Madonna Assunta on August 15th. The detailed calendar, including food festivals, concerts, and initiatives dedicated to emigrants, is usually released by the municipal administration and the Pro Loco in the weeks leading up to Ferragosto.
Bompensiere is located in central Sicily, in the province of Caltanissetta. By car, it can be reached via the SS640 (Caltanissetta-Agrigento) and the provincial roads of the Vallone area; the nearest airports are Palermo and Catania. The reference railway station is Caltanissetta.
Events are concentrated in the first half of August, culminating in the Feast of the Assumption on August 15th. Dates and the detailed program are published by the Municipality and the Pro Loco in the preceding weeks.
Most events (procession, food festivals, concerts in the square) are free to attend. As it is a small village, it is advisable to organize accommodation in neighboring towns in advance.
