The patronal feast of Alta Irpinia featuring novenas, processions, and live music in the square
In Sturno, a town in the Alta Irpinia area of the Avellino province, devotion to Saint Michael the Archangel is more than just a religious observance; it is the lens through which the town defines itself. The village grew around its ancient Michaelic abbey, and even today, the main square, named after Michele Aufiero, opens up directly in front of the sanctuary. Few communities in Irpinia show such a deep bond between popular religiosity and civic history: the Archangel's name is woven into the local street names, family traditions, and the stories told by the elders.
The original core of the ancient abbey dates back to the late 16th century; in 1807, the building was elevated to the rank of a parish church. In the early 20th century, the Archconfraternity of the Rosary was founded there by Baron Angelo Marino Grella, while the rectory was built in 1933. The 1980 Irpinia earthquake destroyed the complex, which was reopened for worship on May 7, 1994, coinciding with the return of the restored statue of the Archangel. On September 6, 2018, by episcopal decree, the church was elevated to a diocesan sanctuary in recognition of the intense veneration shown by the faithful over the centuries.
Inside, the wide nave houses the high altar, topped by the wooden effigy of the Archangel crafted in 1654, along with a rich collection of wooden statues and paintings from the Neapolitan school. It is here, and nowhere else, that the feast finds its center of gravity.
As in many Irpinian towns linked to the cult of Saint Michael, the patron saint is celebrated twice a year in Sturno: on May 8th, commemorating the Archangel's apparition, and on September 29th, the liturgical feast day. The first event maintains a more intimate and devotional character, while the second expands into two days of shows, concerts, and fireworks in Piazza Michele Aufiero. Those unfamiliar with inland Campania are often surprised by this double celebration; however, it is the norm along the ancient Michaelic routes that crossed the southern Apennines from the Gargano.
The rhythm is the tried-and-true pace of Southern patronal feasts:
Anyone arriving in Sturno for the first time during the feast immediately understands that this is not an event staged for tourism. It is the town putting itself in order: families prepare lunch for distant relatives, confraternities come out in traditional attire, and children are dressed as little angels for the blessing. Stalls selling nougat, peanuts, and toys line the square, and by evening, the air is filled with the sound of the band. It is a free festival, open to all, where visitors are welcomed without formality.
The municipality of Sturno is located in the eastern part of the Avellino province, in a part of Campania that thrives on agriculture, livestock, and slow tourism made up of villages, sanctuaries, and walking paths. Nearby, one can easily reach Frigento with its panoramic view over the Ufita Valley, Gesualdo with the castle of the madrigalist prince, Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi, and the Goleto Abbey. A visit to the Saint Michael festival can therefore become a pretext to discover an authentic Irpinia, far from crowded circuits, where tradition is not put on stage but simply lived.
Faith, tradition, and music: this is how the local press summarized May 8, 2026, in Sturno, a town in the Avellino province. The festivities in honor of Saint Michael the Archangel, the town's patron, were preceded by the novena, celebrated from April 29 to May 7, every day at 6:00 PM at the Diocesan Sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel.
On the day of the feast, the community gathered first for the morning Holy Masses, then for the late afternoon Eucharistic celebration, followed by the traditional procession of the Saint through the streets of the center, accompanied by the Città di Airola “G. Puccini” brass band. In the evening, the tone shifted with the concert by the Odissea Orchestra, while illuminations and a pyrotechnic show concluded a day awaited all year, capable of drawing numerous devotees and visitors from Alta Irpinia to Sturno.
