The patronal feast of Lioni, between the Sanctuary and free Ferragosto concerts
In Lioni, a town of just over six thousand inhabitants in the province of Avellino, nestled in the heart of Alta Irpinia at the gateway to the Picentini Mountains Regional Park, the Saint Roch Festival is much more than a religious recurrence: it is the moment when the town gathers in its entirety. In August, emigrants return, families reopen their homes, and the center fills with lights and market stalls. In Campania, mid-August patronal feasts have marked the calendar of inland towns for centuries, and Lioni's is among the most attended in the Ofanto Valley.
The bond between Lioni and Saint Roch stems from the plague: in 1737, the town church was rebuilt under the title of the pilgrim saint from Montpellier, invoked as a protector against contagion. On October 31, 1774, by a notarial deed drawn up by local notary Vincenzo Ronca, Saint Roch was proclaimed the main Patron of the community. In 1785, the church was expanded with two side aisles, an artistic stone portal, and a colonnade that can still be admired today.
The current building is the reconstruction following the November 23, 1980 Irpinia earthquake, which hit Lioni severely. The new Sanctuary, designed together with the adjacent Franciscan convent by architect Giovanni Muzio—it was his final work—was inaugurated on March 23, 1988, and elevated to a diocesan sanctuary in 1997. Inside, it preserves the ancient 1785 portal, the 19th-century colonnade, the wooden statue of Saint Roch crafted in the mid-18th century by local sculptor Pietro Nittoli, and a large pipe organ. For the people of Lioni, the Sanctuary is both a place of devotion and a symbol of rebirth after the quake.
The festivities open every year on August 6th with the novena, nine days of prayer that accompany the town until the solemnity. August 16th is the Patron's day: Eucharistic celebrations follow one another from the morning, with the procession carrying the Saint's statue through the streets of the center, drawing great popular participation. The three doors of the Sanctuary are thrown open only on the 16th and 17th. The evening of August 17th preserves a unique Lioni ritual: couples of newlyweds and families with children in their arms enter the Sanctuary to entrust them to the protection of Saint Roch, in an uninterrupted flow that lasts until late at night.
Alongside the religious program, the municipal administration has for years organized a schedule of free-entry shows, included in the «Loving Lioni» summer festival. The Ferragosto stage has become a fixed appointment for Irpinian music, capable of attracting audiences from the entire province of Avellino and nearby Basilicata. Concerts by national artists, DJ sets in the historic center, illuminations, fireworks, and food stands transform the town squares into a single festive space.
Lioni is an excellent starting point to discover Alta Irpinia: the woods of the Picentini Mountains Regional Park, Lake Laceno in Bagnoli Irpino, the springs of Caposele, and the villages of Nusco, Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi, and Morra De Sanctis. A territory also known for its great wines—Taurasi, Fiano di Avellino, and Greco di Tufo—and for a mountain cuisine made of fresh pasta, cheeses, and chestnuts.
The 2026 patronal feast calendar follows the usual tradition: the novena opens on August 6th and accompanies the community until August 16th, the day of Saint Roch, with celebrations at the Sanctuary and the procession through the town streets. The evening of August 17th remains dedicated to the pilgrimage of the faithful before the Patron's statue and, at the same time, to the grand festival in the square.
The announcement that caused the most buzz in Irpinia concerns the final evening: Nek (Filippo Neviani) will perform on August 17, 2026, in Piazza IV Novembre with the «Nek Hits Live» tour. This is the only free-entry date of a tour that has recorded numerous sold-out shows elsewhere. The concert is built as a journey through the artist's career, from the tracks that made him famous in the nineties to his most recent productions.
The event is promoted by the municipal administration of Lioni within the «Loving Lioni» framework. Mayor Yuri Gioino spoke of «a moment of strong participation and sharing, where music becomes an opportunity for meeting» and for enhancing the territory; event delegate Michele Di Sapio emphasized the «more intimate and participatory» dimension compared to large arenas. As every year, the festival attracts tourists and emigrants who have returned for their summer holidays.
