The patronal feast of Castelfranci, blending Marian devotion with a grand summer celebration in Irpinia
The origins of the veneration of Maria Santissima del Soccorso in Castelfranci are lost in the mists of time. Popular tradition tells of a poor woman who, after a vision, asked the local clergy in vain for the construction of a chapel: it was a miraculous snowfall, occurring in the middle of summer on the first Sunday of August, that traced the perimeter of the sacred building on the ground. Since then, the local community has celebrated its patron saint on the first Sunday of the month, keeping alive a custom that has become an integral part of the town's identity.
The heart of the festival is the sanctuary overlooking Piazza Largo Soccorso, at the entrance to the historic center. The 18th-century Baroque facade, with its three portals, and the multi-tiered bell tower lead into a Latin-cross interior with a central nave and side aisles. It houses paintings by Matteo Vigilante from Solofra, including the depiction of the Madonna del Soccorso and the Maria Immacolata on the vault, as well as a 19th-century polychrome wooden statue of the Neapolitan school, dressed in white silk brocade and a star-quilted mantle. The church was elevated to a sanctuary in 1909, crowning a long history of graces attributed to the Virgin, particularly during the 17th-century plagues, when the town was reportedly almost entirely spared.
On August 7, 1826, by a bull of Pope Leo XII, the first golden coronation of the Virgin of Soccorso was authorized. Two other solemn coronations followed, in 1839 and 1841, linked to the miracles attributed to the Madonna. It is from that 1826 date that the calendar of the Centenary Celebrations 1826-2026 begins, promoted by the Municipality of Castelfranci together with the Festival Committee and the parish: a year of cultural, historical, and musical initiatives accompanying the 2026 summer patronal feast.
The model of the Castelfranci festival is the classic one for Irpinian patronal feasts. The religious program โ a novena, solemn masses, and processions involving Saint Rocco and Saint Felice in addition to the Madonna โ is complemented by a secular program consisting of grand brass band concerts, illuminations, market stalls, fireworks, and evening concerts in the square. In recent years, the lineup has hosted well-known names from the Italian music scene, capable of attracting audiences from the entire upper Calore valley.
Castelfranci is a small town of just over a thousand inhabitants in the province of Avellino, in Campania, nestled in the upper Calore valley. It is a land of vineyards and quality wines, in an area where Aglianico is at home, and the August festival represents the moment when the town repopulates: those who have emigrated and those living elsewhere return for the occasion, so the Soccorso festivities function as a true community gathering rather than just a simple tourist event.
Those who arrive in Castelfranci during the festival days find a town decorated with lights, streets filled with bands, and the square crowded until late at night. It is an opportunity to observe up close a Southern Italian popular religiosity that is still deeply felt and, at the same time, to enjoy the most festive and convivial part of the Irpinian summer. In 2026, with the bicentenary of the first coronation, the community's anticipation is even higher than usual.
2026 is not just another summer in Castelfranci: the patronal feast of Maria SS. del Soccorso is part of the Centenary Celebrations 1826-2026, the calendar celebrating two hundred years since the first golden coronation of the Virgin. The initiatives, launched in the preceding months, involve the parish of Santa Maria del Soccorso, the Municipality of Castelfranci, the Festival Committee, and the Archdiocese of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi-Conza-Nusco-Bisaccia.
On Thursday, July 23, at 7:00 PM, the church of Santa Maria del Soccorso hosted the conference "Let's enjoy our treasure - Devotion to Mary in the Castelfranci tradition (1826-2026)", preceded by the presentation of a sacred painting restored under the supervision of the Superintendency. A moment of study that traced two centuries of the town's religious and artistic history.
The most anticipated moment is set for Sunday, August 2, at 10:00 PM, when Piazza Santa Maria del Soccorso hosts the concert of the State Police Fanfare. A program designed to interweave band repertoire and lyrical moments, in the same square where Marian devotion was born two hundred years ago. Admission is free, and for a town of just over a thousand inhabitants, it promises to be the most crowded evening of the summer.
At the time of writing, the complete religious and secular program of the festivities - processions, solemn masses, brass band concerts, and fireworks that traditionally accompany the first Sunday of August - had not yet been fully published. It is advisable to follow the channels of the Municipality of Castelfranci and the Maria SS. del Soccorso Festival Committee for updates.

Castelfranci is located in the upper Calore valley, in the eastern part of the province of Avellino. The nearest provincial capital is Avellino, reachable by car; the railway station and the reference airport for those arriving from afar are in Naples, connected by regional bus lines to Irpinia. The most convenient way to travel remains by car.
The center of the festival is Piazza Largo Soccorso, in front of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Soccorso, at the beginning of the historic center; processions and parades pass through the town streets. The church is accessible on the ground floor, without architectural barriers.
Religious celebrations, processions, and concerts in the square are free of charge. Only purchases at food stands and market stalls are paid.
