A patronal festival in the heart of Irpinia

The Saint Stephen the Protomartyr Festival is the signature event of Santo Stefano del Sole, a village of just over two thousand inhabitants nestled at an altitude of 547 meters in the province of Avellino, Campania. The town shares its name with the saint to whom it is dedicated, and every year in early August, it hosts two days of civil and religious celebrations that transform Piazza del Sole and the surrounding streets into a vibrant communal space.

Why the patron saint is celebrated in August

Saint Stephen the Protomartyr, the first Christian martyr, is commemorated in the liturgical calendar on December 26. However, in many communities across Southern Italy, the external festivities are moved to early August, when the weather allows for late-night outdoor gatherings and when many expatriates return home for their summer holidays. In Santo Stefano del Sole, the celebration is traditionally held around August 3rd, the date associated with the discovery of the saint's relics.

Two days of faith and festivities

The festival features two complementary aspects: the religious celebrations in honor of the patron saint, organized by the parish community, and the civil program, promoted by the Saint Stephen the Protomartyr Committee in collaboration with the municipal administration, the Pro Loco, and local associations. This balance between ritual and public celebration is a hallmark of Irpinian patronal feasts, where faith and community life alternate throughout the day.

Bands, concerts, and fireworks

In recent years, the civil program has followed a well-loved format:

• the «Siamo alla frutta» evening, which kicks off the festivities in Piazza del Sole with a concert followed by a DJ set, aimed primarily at the local youth;
• the marching band parading through the village streets from the early morning, followed by a musical matinée in the square and a second performance in the late afternoon;
• the fireworks display in the evening, the highlight of the festivities;
• the closing concert in the square, with local food stalls open throughout the evening.

Local flavors

As with any Irpinian festival, gastronomy is an integral part of the experience. At the stalls set up around the square, visitors can sample typical local products. The town hosts specific events throughout the year dedicated to its culinary excellence, from the cherry festival in late June to the Whole Roasted Podolica Veal Festival in late August, which has now reached over fifty editions.

Part of the «Vivi Santo Stefano» program

For several years, the patronal festival has been part of the municipal summer calendar «Vivi Santo Stefano», which accompanies the village from June to September. The 2025 edition held special significance, celebrating 500 years of community with guests such as Eugenio Bennato, Mariella Nava, and Tibau Tavares. The 2026 edition, presented by Mayor Gerardo Santoli, focuses on bridging generations and cultural traditions, featuring the Nova Summer Festival for youth, a sunset concert by maestro Peppe Barra, the mid-August SoleArte exhibition, and the Saint Vitus Martyr celebrations at the end of the month.

The village and its surroundings

Santo Stefano del Sole is located about ten kilometers from Avellino, on the slopes overlooking the Sabato Valley and the Picentini Mountains. The municipal territory includes the districts of Boschi, Toppolo, Macchie, Sozze di Sopra, Sozze di Sotto, and San Pietro, each with its own traditions, such as the Saint Joseph celebrations in the Sozze district in July. For those visiting Irpinia in the summer, the patronal festival is the most authentic way to experience the village from the inside, without any tourist filters.

When to go

The festivities traditionally take place on August 2nd and 3rd. At an altitude of 547 meters, the evenings remain pleasant even in the height of summer, and the square fills up especially after dinner, when live music takes over from the church bells.
