The patronal feast of Santo Stefano del Sole, featuring the Procession of the Thousand Candles and fireworks
The Saint Vitus Martyr Festival is the defining event for Santo Stefano del Sole, a small town in the Province of Avellino, Campania, nestled at an altitude of about 547 meters in the Sabato Valley. The festival's history began in 1814, when the community obtained the relics of Saint Vitus from Rome and elected him as their protector—a choice made after the difficult years of the early 19th century that has never been abandoned. Since then, the town has celebrated its patron not on June 15th, the saint's liturgical day, but on the last Sunday of August, to commemorate the arrival of the relics.
The heart of the festival is the Procession of the Thousand Candles, which winds through the historic center on the final Sunday, illuminated by hundreds of candles carried by hand by the faithful. It is the most moving and recognizable moment of the calendar: the statues return to the Mother Church accompanied by the band and the community's shared silence, and the evening concludes with a fireworks display, the traditional seal of Irpinian celebrations.
Saint Vitus is venerated throughout Italy as the protector of fields and harvests and is depicted with a dog by his side, a symbol of intercession against summer heat and the dangers of the countryside. In Santo Stefano del Sole, the devotion also preserves ancient gestures such as the distribution of blessed bread and, in spring, the ritual of the frasca with the Rosamarina, a tambourine song offered from house to house in honor of the saint.
Originally a two-day celebration, the festival has gradually expanded to its current five-day format, structured along two parallel tracks. On one side is the religious program, with solemn masses, the preparatory triduum, and the procession; on the other, the civil program curated by the Saint Vitus Martyr Festival Committee together with the Municipality, which over the years has brought to Piazza del Sole:
Linked to the week of Saint Vitus is the Spit-Roasted Whole Podolica Veal Festival, which reached its 52nd edition in 2025: Podolica breed calves cooked whole for over twelve hours on huge spits lit in the heart of the town, then served in hot sandwiches and traditional dishes. It is one of the most well-known gastronomic events in Irpinia and attracts visitors every year from across the province of Avellino and the Salerno plain.
The village, defined as the gateway to the Picentini Mountains Regional Park, preserves its medieval layout, the 17th-century Mother Church with its stuccoes, the Church of the Immaculate Conception, and the Baroque Baronial Palace, now the town hall. The territory is a land of chestnut and beech forests, hazelnuts, cherries, Annurca apples, and great Campanian white wines like the Fiano di Avellino DOCG: participating in the festival also means discovering this lesser-traveled part of inland Campania, just fifteen minutes from the Irpinian capital.
The festivities are always concentrated in the final days of August and conclude on the last Sunday of the month. For 2026, the municipal program «Vivi Santo Stefano» schedules the Saint Vitus Martyr Festival from August 26th to 30th, with the solemn day on Sunday, August 30th.
The Municipality of Santo Stefano del Sole has included the patronal feast in the summer program «Vivi Santo Stefano 2026», presented by Mayor Gerardo Santoli as a program designed «for all ages», capable of uniting the freshness of new generations with the greatness of the town's cultural tradition. The festivities in honor of Saint Vitus Martyr occupy the last week of August, from August 26 to 30, 2026, and represent the final and most deeply felt moment of the summer in Santo Stefano.
Sunday, August 30, coincides with the last Sunday of the month: it is the date that for 212 years, since 1814, the community has dedicated to its protector in memory of the translation of the relics from Rome. The gastronomic event of the Spit-Roasted Whole Podolica Veal Festival, organized by the Vitello Podolico San Vito association together with the Festival Committee and the Municipality, also revolves around the festival.
The 2026 summer calendar of the village also includes the celebrations of Saint Joseph (July 11-12), the Nova Summer Season (July 19), the sunset concert by Peppe Barra (July 26), the feast of Saint Stephen Protomartyr (August 2-3), SoleArte (August 17-18), and the «Alfredo Mazza» Memorial with a vintage car gathering (September 20).
Santo Stefano del Sole is located about 15 km from Avellino. By car: take the Serino exit on the Avellino-Salerno highway, then follow the SP 105 and SP 5 for about 5 km. Reference train station: Avellino; nearest airport: Naples-Capodichino (about 60 km).
Events are held in the historic center, particularly in Piazza del Sole, the Mother Church, and Piazza Oscar Brini for the cooking of the Podolica veal.
All religious and civil events are free of charge. Only food and drinks at the stalls are paid.
Late August evenings in the hills can be cool: a light jacket is recommended. Parking in the center is limited during the procession; it is better to leave the car in areas outside the village. For accommodation, the area offers farmhouses and B&Bs between Santo Stefano del Sole, Serino, and Avellino.
