On August 10th, Bagnoli Irpino celebrates its patron saint with a procession, live music, and the night of the shooting stars
The Saint Lawrence Feast is the defining event for Bagnoli Irpino, a town in the Province of Avellino, Campania, nestled between the Picentini Mountains and the Laceno plateau. Every year on August 10th, the town pauses its daily rhythm to honor its patron saint with a day alternating between solemn liturgies, the local marching band parading through the historic center, and a major public event in the square in the evening.
It is the town's main celebration, a time when emigrants return home and the squares fill with locals and summer visitors who have come up to the mountains to escape the heat of the plains. The coincidence with the Night of Saint Lawrence, the night of the shooting stars, gives the occasion an extra touch of magic in a region where the sky remains particularly clear.
The devotion of the Bagnoli community to Saint Lawrence, deacon and martyr, dates back to around 1100, when—according to local tradition—Saint Amatus, the first bishop of the nascent Diocese of Nusco, had the church of Saint Lawrence and its adjoining hermitage built. From that ancient core, the district that still bears the saint's name was born, which becomes the destination of the procession every August 10th.
The August liturgical calendar in Bagnoli is particularly busy: Saint Dominic is celebrated on the 4th, Saint Lawrence on the 10th, and Saint Roch on the 16th. The latter is associated with the spectacular Vacca di Fuoco (Fire Cow), a wooden and papier-mâché bull-shaped float loaded with fireworks, which is dragged at a run through the square by the town's youth: a ritual with ancient roots, often cited as one of the symbols of August in Bagnoli.
The devotional heart of the feast takes place between two locations. The Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta, the mother church in Piazza Umberto I—featuring a Latin cross layout, three naves, and a double transept, partially rebuilt after the fire of 1651—hosts the morning masses. In the afternoon, the community walks toward the San Lorenzo district, where an outdoor service is held in front of the saint's small church, before returning in a procession to the mother church.
The day includes several fixed moments: the reflection on the saint's life during the solemn mass, the presence of civil and military authorities, the veneration of the relic, and the final Eucharistic blessing. In the preceding days, a three-day preparation period (triduum) takes place, with the rosary, catechesis, and evening celebrations.
Alongside the religious aspect is the Saint Lawrence Festival, the major evening concert held in Piazza Leonardo Di Capua, named after the 17th-century physician and man of letters from Bagnoli. In recent years, the stage has hosted prominent names in Southern folk and singer-songwriter music: Eugenio Bennato in 2025 and Enzo Gragnaniello in the 2026 edition, both interpreters of a tradition that blends Mediterranean roots, poetic writing, and popular rhythms.
The Saint Lawrence Feast is embedded in the «Bagnoli-Laceno Summer Events» summer calendar, created by the municipal administration together with associations, merchants, and local entities. From mid-July to the end of August, the program distributes dozens of initiatives between the squares of the historic center and the Laceno plateau: concerts, theater, food festivals, children's activities, sports competitions, and food and wine events. Those arriving for August 10th will find a town in full swing.
Bagnoli Irpino is known far beyond the borders of Campania for two excellences: the black truffle and the chestnut, the protagonists of the great autumn festival held in the town. Even in August, the local cuisine deserves attention, and many evenings of the summer calendar are dedicated to typical products. A few kilometers from the center lies the Laceno plateau, with its lake, hiking trails, and slopes that make it one of the few ski resorts in the Campanian Apennines during winter: combining the patronal feast with a day at Laceno is the most natural way to discover this corner of Irpinia.
On August 10th, the historic center is very busy: it is better to arrive early and get around on foot. In the evening, even in the middle of summer, the temperature at this altitude drops significantly.
The 2026 calendar for the patronal feast of Bagnoli Irpino is part of the «Bagnoli Laceno Summer Events 2026» program, presented by the municipal administration together with local associations, running from mid-July until autumn.
The eve, Sunday, August 9th, lights up the square with a Pink Floyd tribute concert by the band Wallside. On the patron saint's day, Monday, August 10th, the traditional sequence resumes: morning celebrations in the mother church, an evening service in the small church in the San Lorenzo district, and, following that, the major musical event in Piazza Leonardo Di Capua with Enzo Gragnaniello, a songwriter and performer capable of blending Neapolitan roots, poetry, and contemporary restlessness.
The rest of the week is equally rich: between August 1st and 8th, the municipal program offers initiatives for families and children, the inauguration of the inclusive halfpipe, the kite festival at Laceno, and the Ravioli Festival on August 8th, while on August 21st, the Municipal Amphitheater hosts another musical evening.
Celebration times are those provided by the Parish of Santa Maria Assunta for summer 2026. The civil program may be subject to changes: it is advisable to check the Municipality of Bagnoli Irpino's channels in the days prior.
By car: from the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, take the Lioni-Grottaminarda or Avellino Est exit, then follow the state and provincial roads towards Montella-Bagnoli Irpino. From Salerno, travel up the Sele Valley and continue towards the Laceno plateau.
By train: the most convenient stations are Avellino and Salerno, from which you can continue via regional bus lines (limited connections on public holidays) or by rental car.
By plane: Naples-Capodichino Airport, about an hour and a half away by car.
The patronal feast events take place outdoors and, as is customary for town festivals, there are no paid tickets for the evenings in the square. Bars, restaurants, and stalls remain open until late on the evenings of August 9th and 10th.
