The patron saint of Conza della Campania is celebrated every August 20th with faith, brass bands, food festivals, and fireworks.
The Sant'Erberto Patronal Feast is the defining event for Conza della Campania, a small town of just over 1,200 residents located at an altitude of 440 meters in the Province of Avellino, Campania, just a stone's throw from the border with Basilicata. The heart of the celebration is August 20th, the saint's liturgical day, but for years the festivities have expanded over several consecutive days, turning the town square into a shared space for prayer, music, and communal dining.
Sant'Erbertoโalso known as Sant'Eribertoโwas the Archbishop of Conza and is currently the patron saint of the town and the Archdiocese of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi-Conza-Nusco-Bisaccia. His relics are kept in the Co-cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the modern building constructed to replace the ancient cathedral destroyed by the 1980 Irpinia earthquake. In October 2025, the relics were the focus of a solemn canonical recognition requested by the Archdiocese, a rare event that drew faithful and scholars to the town, renewing interest in the figure of the patron saint.
The structure of the patronal day follows the classic tradition of Southern Italy, repeated faithfully year after year: in the morning, the brass band parades through the streets to officially open the festival; in the late afternoon, the Solemn Holy Mass is celebrated in Piazza Sandro Pertini in front of the Co-cathedral; and in the evening, the square fills up for musical entertainment. Around midnight, the fireworks arrive, illuminating the Ofanto valley and concluding the most important day of the year for the Conza community.
The religious dimension is always accompanied by gastronomy, with food festivals organized by local associations and the Pro Loco Compsa. The signature dish of the patronal evenings is lu 'Nzaccato, a local peasant tradition preparation to which a specific festival is dedicated. The territory is also home to Irpinian cave caciocavallo and Caciocavallo Silano PDO, products easily found at the stalls and tastings set up in the town.
Those arriving in Conza della Campania for the festival will find much more than just a bustling square. The 1980 earthquake razed the historic center to the ground, leading to the town's reconstruction on a new site. However, beneath the rubble, the remains of the ancient Roman Compsa emerged, now visitable in the Archaeological Park, featuring the forum, amphitheater, thermal baths, and an early Christian basilica. A few minutes away lies the WWF Lake Conza Oasis, a vast body of water nestled among gentle hills and one of the most important sites in Southern Italy for birdwatching. During the summer, the Oasis hosts themed evenings, astronomical observations, and guided tours that fit perfectly with the festival program.
The Sant'Erberto Feast is an authentic village festival, not built for tourism: here, the band, the procession, and the fireworks are not attractions but a community ritual. For those visiting Alta Irpinia in August, it is the best opportunity to understand how a small town in inland Campania holds together memory, faith, and the desire to be together, with the generosity typical of the Irpinian table.
The 2026 edition of the Sant'Erberto Patronal Feast in Conza della Campania occupies the central week of August, from August 18th to 22nd, as part of the Conza Summer 2026 program promoted by the Municipality together with the Pro Loco, the Youth Forum, and local associations.
It begins on the 18th with a food festival and music, continues with a family show on the 19th, and reaches August 20th, the patron saint's day, with the main concert in Piazza Sandro Pertini followed by an after-party. The 21st features live music and the festival lottery, while the 22nd closes the event with a solidarity-themed evening. The eve is preceded by the Sant'Erberto Tournament on August 17th, which effectively opens the festival week.
The patronal feast is preceded and followed by other Conza Summer events: early August evenings with games, treasure hunts, and a dessert festival, the observation of the lunar eclipse on August 27th at the WWF Lake Conza Oasis, and the ArcheoSpritz on August 28th at the Compsa Archaeological Park.
Program released by the Municipality of Conza della Campania and featured on the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino. Times and content may be subject to change: it is advisable to check the Municipality and Pro Loco Compsa channels on the eve of the event.

Food festivals and some evening events are held along Corso XXIII Novembre and in the town's public spaces. Parking is free but limited during the main evenings: it is advisable to arrive a little early.
