On August 4th, Bagnoli Irpino kicks off its trio of August festivals
In Bagnoli Irpino, a village in the Altirpinia area of the Province of Avellino, August 4th is no ordinary date: it is the day the village rallies around Saint Dominic of Guzmán to begin its long month of festivities. This celebration marks the start of what locals call the trio of August festivals, which continues with Saint Lawrence on August 10th and concludes with Saint Roch on August 16th. This is not a festival staged for tourists; it is the community's own calendar, marked by church bells, processions, and the band playing through the narrow streets at sunrise.
The cult is rooted in the monumental complex of Saint Dominic, one of the most iconic landmarks of the historic center. The convent was founded in 1485, and the church was inaugurated in 1490, originally dedicated to Saint Mary of Loreto. It was later expanded and renovated in the following century by Ambrogio Salvio, a Dominican friar from Bagnoli, who added a student residence that would serve as a cultural reference point for the entire inland area for centuries. Although the complex was suppressed in 1808 under French anti-clerical laws, the church has continued to preserve the village's bond with the Dominican order.
Visitors today will find a remarkable artistic heritage: the bell tower, standing about thirty meters high, dominates the village skyline with its quadrangular base and octagonal top. Inside, the large 1556 canvas by Marco Pino da Siena, over four meters tall, stands out, while the coffered ceiling with gilded frames illustrates the life of Saint Dominic and other Dominican saints.
The festival is more than a one-day event. The three preceding days feature the preparatory triduum, with the rosary, litanies, vespers, holy mass, and catechesis in the late afternoon. The first day is dedicated to the processional transport of the statue to the church of Saint Dominic, a gesture that symbolically opens the festival season.
On August 4th, the day is divided into three celebrations: morning masses, the solemn mass at noon, and the late afternoon service followed by the procession. The parade leaves the church of Saint Dominic, crosses the Vigna dei Monaci district, and travels along the southern and northern slopes of the village, concluding at the mother church with community prayer, Eucharistic blessing, and the veneration of the relic. It is the moment when the village, which doubles in size during summer thanks to returning emigrants and visitors from Laceno, truly feels complete.
Alongside the religious program, the secular schedule—managed by the festival committee—has always played a key role. It begins at eight in the morning with the traditional brass band parade, waking the neighborhoods with ritual marches, and ends late at night with a concert in the square: folk music, traditional sounds, and Southern repertoires that keep people out until late. It is a simple formula, repeated year after year, which works precisely because it doesn't try to be anything other than what it is.
The Municipality of Bagnoli Irpino sits at an altitude of about 654 meters in the mountainous heart of Campania and thrives on two complementary souls: the historic village, with its churches and palaces, and the Laceno plateau, with its karst lake and trails that attract hikers and families in summer. It is also a land of recognized gastronomic excellence, from black truffles to Bagnoli pecorino cheese, celebrated in autumn by other local events.
Those arriving on August 4th will find a village in full swing: the patronal festivals are part of the municipal summer calendar, which alternates concerts, food festivals, theater, and sporting events.
In Bagnoli Irpino, in the Province of Avellino, the Saint Dominic festival will once again open the trio of August festivities in 2026, which will continue with Saint Lawrence on August 10th and conclude with Saint Roch on August 16th.
The main events begin on Saturday, August 1st, with the processional transport of the statue to the church of Saint Dominic and the start of the preparatory triduum: at 5:30 PM rosary, litanies, and triduum; at 6:00 PM vespers, holy mass, and catechesis. On Sunday, August 2nd, festive masses in the mother church are scheduled at 9:30 AM and 11:00 AM.
The highlight is Tuesday, August 4th: holy mass at 8:30 AM, solemn mass at 11:00 AM, and at 6:00 PM, a celebration followed by the procession that leaves the church of Saint Dominic, crosses the Vigna dei Monaci district, and continues along the southern and northern slopes of the village to the mother church, where it concludes with community prayer and Eucharistic blessing.
The secular program accompanies the day from dawn to night: at 8:00 AM the traditional brass band parade, and at 10:00 PM the concert by the folk music ensemble Le Voci del Sud. The parish, with the parish priest Father Stefano Dell'Angelo, invites the entire community, vacationers, and visitors present in Bagnoli and Laceno to participate.
Program organized by the festival committee and the parish, with Father Stefano Dell'Angelo. Any changes will be announced locally in the days leading up to the festival.
By car: from the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, take the Lioni-Grottaminarda or Avellino Est exit depending on your direction, then follow provincial roads to Bagnoli Irpino (about 50 minutes from Avellino). From Salerno, drive up along the State Road 164 through the Sele Valley.
Celebrations are concentrated in the church of Saint Dominic (Largo San Domenico) and the mother church of the Collegiate of Saint Mary of the Assumption, in the heart of the historic center. The band parade and the evening concert take place throughout the village streets and squares.
All religious and secular events are free and open to the public.
The historic center is pedestrianized during the procession; it is best to park at the entrance to the village and continue on foot. For the evening, it is useful to bring a light jacket, as temperatures drop at 654 meters altitude, even in August. Those wishing to extend their visit will find accommodation and farmhouses both in the village and on the Laceno plateau.
