The patronal feast of Sturno, held on August 8th in the heart of the Ufita Valley
The Feast of Saint Dominic of Guzmán is the most cherished event in the civil and religious calendar of Sturno, a town of just over three thousand inhabitants in the Province of Avellino, Campania, perched at an altitude of 650 meters among the hills of the Ufita Valley. Every year on August 8th, the day the Church commemorates the founder of the Order of Preachers, the town suspends its ordinary rhythms to gather around its patron saint: a date that the Sturno community considers the true center of the summer.
The Municipality of Sturno officially includes the festivities in its event calendar, while the liturgical aspects are managed by the Parish of SS. Dominic and Francis. The result is a dual-natured celebration, where devotional moments and conviviality follow one another seamlessly throughout one long day.
In Sturno, the cult of Saint Dominic is not a formal custom but a defining trait of local identity. The town began as a 17th-century settlement linked to Frigento and only became an autonomous municipality in 1809: in such a young community, the figure of the patron saint has long served as a social glue, marking the rhythms of agricultural work and the departures and returns of emigration. It is no coincidence that August 8th is the day when many Sturno natives living elsewhere return to the village, and the streets of the center fill with reunions, greetings, and impromptu feasts.
The festival is part of a fabric of religious traditions that remain very much alive: the Sabburco, the Holy Thursday altar of repose adorned with sprouted wheat and seasonal flowers; the Madonna of the Rosary feast on May 31st; and the ancient agricultural rite of the Surco re l'Angelo linked to Saint Michael the Archangel. However, Saint Dominic remains the most widely attended celebration, involving the entire town.
The structure of the day repeats itself year after year with few variations. The rhythm is that of classic Southern patronal feasts:
All events are free to attend: no tickets, no reservations required.
The hub of the celebrations is the Church of Saints Dominic and Francis, on Via San Domenico. The original building was opened for worship in 1694 and expanded over the following centuries, before being demolished between the 1960s and 1970s and rebuilt nearby with modern lines at the initiative of the archpriest Father Giuseppe Abbondandolo (1910-1985). Inside, stained-glass windows dedicated to the Beatitudes filter a multicolored light that accompanies the nave.
The church also houses late 17th-century Neapolitan school paintings, a marble altar from the Cathedral of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi, and above all, an 18th-century altarpiece depicting the embrace between Saint Francis and Saint Dominic, attributed to Luca Giordano.
The patronal feast is not an isolated event: it is part of the summer program that the Municipality of Sturno publishes every year under the name E-State Sturnese, a schedule that alternates sports, culture, music, shows, and popular traditions from June to September. During the same period, the town hosts the Soli Deo Gloria organ festival, the feasts of Saint Roch and Saint Michael, and the highly popular Sturno Sport Festival at the Il Castagneto sports field, which brings national-level athletes and champions to Irpinia.
Those who travel to Sturno for the feast will also find honest, rustic hill-country cuisine. The territory produces DOP extra virgin olive oil, cured meats, and sun-dried peppers, while among the traditional sweets, the copeta—a local artisanal nougat—stands out. Around August 8th, the town's businesses remain open until late in the evening, in an atmosphere that blends religious reflection and convivial joy.
The 2026 edition of the festivities in honor of Saint Dominic of Guzmán, patron saint of Sturno, is scheduled for Saturday, August 8, 2026. The date appears in the official event calendar published by the Municipality of Sturno and is also mentioned in the presentation of the E-State Sturnese 2026 summer program, which accompanies the Irpinian town with sports, culture, music, and popular traditions from June to September.
This year, the feast falls on a Saturday, a condition that encourages the participation of those returning to the village for the summer. It also takes place close to other key events of the Sturno season: the Soli Deo Gloria organ festival, which begins in late July, and the Sturno Sport Festival scheduled for the following days at the Il Castagneto sports field.
The detailed program with celebration times, the procession route, and the names of the artists expected in Piazza San Domenico is traditionally released by the Parish of SS. Dominic and Francis and the Municipality in the days immediately preceding the feast. For the 2026 edition, as of the date of this entry, the complete poster has not yet been published.
Free admission to all initiatives and the established structure of the day—consisting of liturgical moments, a procession accompanied by a band, and an evening show in the square—remain confirmed.
The celebrations are held at the Church of Saints Dominic and Francis, on Via San Domenico in Sturno (83055), and in the adjacent Piazza San Domenico for the civil and musical events. The procession winds through the streets of the town center.
By car: Take the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway exit towards Valle dell'Ufita, then follow provincial roads towards Sturno; the town is about fifty kilometers from Avellino and is easily reached from Grottaminarda and Frigento.
By train: The nearest useful station is Avellino, which is connected by regional bus lines; however, the most convenient way to travel remains by car.
Free admission to all religious celebrations, the procession, and evening performances in the square.
