The medieval week in Torremaggiore following in the footsteps of Frederick II at Castel Fiorentino
Suggestioni Sub Flore is the event that transforms Torremaggiore, a town in the Capitanata region of Foggia, into a grand medieval narrative dedicated to Frederick II of Swabia, the emperor nicknamed Stupor Mundi. The bond between this Daunian town and the emperor is profound: it was at the site of Castel Fiorentino, now an archaeological area within the municipality of Torremaggiore, that Frederick II passed away on December 13, 1250. This historical event serves as the foundation for the entire festival, a tapestry of re-enactments, performances, conferences, and popular rituals that bring a true 'Frederickian week' to life.
The beating heart of the event is the Historical Pageant of Fiorentino and Frederick II, one of the longest-running re-enactments in Northern Puglia, established in 1985. Hundreds of costumed participants parade through the streets of the historic center: ladies, knights, archers, flag-wavers, and musicians accompany the emperor and his court in a spectacular display. The pageant concludes with the Palio delle Contrade, a challenge between the city districts (including Torrevecchia, Codacchio-San Nicola, Santa Maria dell'Arco, and Santa Maria della Strada) who compete in the equestrian ring joust in the main square.
Alongside the pageant, the Suggestioni Sub Flore program features theatrical performances, the re-enactment of the Defeat of Fiorentino, medieval banquets with fire-eaters and jesters, guided tours of the archaeological site and local sanctuaries, conferences on the emperor, and screenings dedicated to the final days of Frederick II. One of the most evocative moments is the dawn concert at Castel Fiorentino, which welcomes the public at sunrise in the event's symbolic location, followed by the traditional burning of the Castle, a light and fire show that serves as the ideal finale to the festivities.
The festival is promoted by the Municipality of Torremaggiore through the Department of Culture and Tourism, with the involvement of numerous local associations—including the "Don Tommaso Leccisotti" Cultural Activities Center, the Borgo Antico association, the "Turris Maior" historical archers, the "Insieme per Fiorentino" association, and the "Florentinum" flag-wavers and musicians group—and is sponsored by the Puglia Region. The event is part of the city's summer calendar, held near the nearby Eco Festa Contadina, and represents one of the most cherished identity-defining appointments in the Alto Tavoliere.
Located between the Tavoliere delle Puglie and the first slopes of the Daunian Sub-Apennines, Torremaggiore is known for the Ducal Castle De Sangro, its wine, and a historical heritage rooted in the ancient Fiorentino. Participating in Suggestioni Sub Flore means discovering this lesser-known part of Puglia, far from the most crowded tourist routes, and rediscovering the Middle Ages through the memory of one of the most fascinating sovereigns in European history.
Torremaggiore renews its appointment with Suggestioni Sub Flore in 2026, the festival dedicated to Frederick II of Swabia and the site of Castel Fiorentino. The confirmed dates are from August 30 to September 6, 2026, with the usual structure consisting of medieval re-enactments, costumed pageants, historical banquets, and the evocative dawn concert at the archaeological site. The event takes place close to the Eco Festa Contadina, expanding the late-summer calendar of the Daunian village. The complete program, including the line-up, times, and details of the Historical Pageant and the Palio delle Contrade, will be published by the organization closer to the event.
Torremaggiore is located in the Alto Tavoliere, in the province of Foggia. By car, it can be reached via the A14 motorway (Poggio Imperiale-Lesina or San Severo exit) and the SS16 state road. The nearest train station is San Severo, on the Adriatic line, connected to Torremaggiore by bus.
The archaeological site of Castel Fiorentino is located a few kilometers from the town center: during the event, a free shuttle service from the Ducal Castle is often provided; booking is recommended (info and bookings via the municipal number).
Most events—pageants, re-enactments, dawn concert—are free to attend; for the medieval banquet and certain initiatives, booking or a contribution may be required. Comfortable shoes are recommended for the historic center, as well as a light jacket for the cool late-summer evenings.
