Agricultural biodiversity and Slow Food Presidia in the heart of the Canavese region
In the heart of the Canavese, just a few kilometers from Turin, the village of San Giorgio Canavese hosts the annual Earth and Biodiversity Market, an event that has transformed the traditional farmers' market into a true laboratory of ideas and relationships centered on food, the land, and sustainability. The streets and squares of the historic center are filled with stalls from over 100 producers from all over Italy and beyond, all united by a common commitment: farming and producing with deep respect for the environment.
The core theme of the event is agricultural biodiversity, viewed as a precious resource to be protected and a cultural heritage of the territory. Along the market route, visitors encounter numerous Slow Food Presidia, the finest products from the Turin Province Basket, and the Maestri del Gusto, alongside specialties from every corner of the peninsula: from Storico Ribelle cheese to Sicilian saffron, from Neapolitan papaccella peppers to red beans from Lucca, and the fava beans of Carpino. The absolute star is the Piattella Canavesana di Cortereggio, a local legume recognized as a Slow Food Presidium and a symbol of this land's identity.
The market extends far beyond simple sales. A significant portion is dedicated to the younger generation through the Children's Biodiversity Festival, featuring educational workshops, creative activities, and games. Following the weekend, the Castle of San Giorgio Canavese transforms into an open-air lecture hall for educational sessions involving middle and high school students, allowing them to engage directly with producers and gastronomy experts.
The Earth and Biodiversity Market is the inaugural event of the Reciprocity Festival, a cultural project promoted by the Tre Terre Canavesane—the municipalities of San Giorgio Canavese, Agliè, and Castellamonte. This intercultural movement focuses on exchange, cooperation, and the promotion of the culinary and landscape excellence of this corner of Piedmont. The event is held under the patronage of the Metropolitan City of Turin.
The 2026 edition celebrated the tenth anniversary of the event with the theme "Radicata 2026 – Orco che Zuppa!", a play on words between the deep bond with the land and a tribute to the Orco stream, the "Eva d'òr" (golden water) of Piedmontese tradition, vital for the hamlet of Cortereggio. A widespread festival in the historic center of San Giorgio Canavese, with over 100 exhibitors and a packed calendar of initiatives.
Special guests included Michelin-starred chef Pasquale Laera, food creator Aurora Cavallo ("Cooker Girl"), and cartoonist Giulio Giordano, illustrator of Diabolik. For the little ones, the third edition of the Children's Biodiversity Festival returned, featuring educational and floral workshops, the "Talenteen" talent show, and creative spaces.
San Giorgio Canavese is located in the province of Turin, in the Canavese area. By car, it is accessible via the A5 Turin-Aosta motorway (exits at Scarmagno or San Giorgio-Cuorgnè) and the SP 222 road. By train, the reference station is Rivarolo Canavese, on the Turin-Rivarolo-Pont line, from which you can continue by local bus.
Admission to the market is free.
The market takes place in the historic center of San Giorgio Canavese, generally over the weekend, with educational days held at the Castle during the following weekdays. Comfortable clothing is recommended for exploring the village stalls on foot.
