The Marian feast of San Nicandro Garganico, in the heart of the Gargano
The Feast of the Madonna di Costantinopoli is one of the most deeply rooted religious and popular events in San Nicandro Garganico, a town in the Gargano area of the province of Foggia, in Apulia. Every year, in the first days of September, the town gathers around the venerated Marian image, amidst faith, collective memory, and moments of celebration that involve entire generations of locals.
The heart of the devotion is the 16th-century statue of the Madonna di Costantinopoli, housed in the Church of San Giorgio, in the ancient Terravecchia district, the most evocative historic core of the village. The festival falls near September 8th, the day of the Nativity of Mary, and has its roots in an ancient tradition linked to the cult of Constantinople, which spread throughout Southern Italy.
The festivities open with the novena, traditionally celebrated from August 30th to September 8th with the rosary and evening holy mass, animated by the Confraternity of Maria SS. di Costantinopoli. On September 8th, celebrations follow one another from the early hours of the morning, with masses starting at 7:00 AM, leading up to the transfer of the statue to the Mother Church in the late afternoon and the solemn evening mass.
The most anticipated moment is the solemn procession that winds through the streets of the historic center starting from the Church of San Giorgio, accompanied by a brass band. Upon returning to Piazza Colonna, the sky lights up with fireworks, followed by the final mass with the distribution of the crown flowers to the faithful, a symbolic gesture deeply felt by the community.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival also offers moments of spectacle and entertainment in the square, with evenings dedicated to comedy and folk music that enliven the town center and attract many visitors from neighboring Gargano towns.
Nestled between Lake Lesina, the Adriatic coast, and the hills of the Gargano, San Nicandro Garganico is a village rich in history, featuring the characteristic Terravecchia district and its castle. The Feast of the Madonna di Costantinopoli represents an identity-defining event for the local community that combines spirituality, tradition, and conviviality.
For 2026, the Feast of the Madonna di Costantinopoli confirms its traditional calendar in San Nicandro Garganico. The secular evening is scheduled for September 6th in Piazza Castello from 8:30 PM, featuring a comedy show as the highlight of the event. This is followed by the days of the novena and the religious celebrations culminating on September 8th, with the procession of the venerated statue and fireworks in Piazza Colonna.
San Nicandro Garganico can be reached by car from the A14 motorway (Poggio Imperiale-Lesina exit) by continuing towards the Gargano. The San Nicandro Garganico railway station is served by the Adriatic line. The nearest airport is Bari-Palese, about a two-hour drive away.
The celebrations are concentrated in the Church of San Giorgio (Terravecchia district), the Mother Church, and the streets of the historic center, with secular events in Piazza Castello and the fireworks finale in Piazza Colonna.
Participation in religious services and events in the square is free. It is recommended to check the committee and parish channels for updated schedules.
