The December 8th solemnity in the heart of Agrigento's historic center
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Feast of the Immaculate Conception is one of the most deeply rooted religious celebrations in the municipality of Agrigento, Sicily. Every year, on December 8th, the entire historic center gathers around the Basilica of the Immaculate, in the heart of the ancient city, to pay homage to the Madonna in a day that weaves together solemn liturgy, popular devotion, and ancient local customs.
The festivities are not confined to a single day: they are preceded by a novena which, in recent editions, has taken place starting from late November. Every afternoon, the Rosary and the singing of the Stellario are held in the basilica, followed by the Eucharistic celebration. The preparation program includes moments dedicated to children, a Marian vigil, and cultural meetings, such as a roundtable on the history and iconography of the Basilica of the Immaculate. On the eve, December 7th, the brass band parades through the city streets, and the statue is placed in the niche of the high altar.
The day of the solemnity opens at dawn with the brass band wake-up call, as the band brings the streets of the historic center to life. Eucharistic celebrations follow throughout the morning, culminating in the solemn mass presided over by diocesan ecclesiastical authorities. A particularly anticipated moment is the floral tribute by the Agrigento Fire Brigade, who use an aerial ladder to reach the image of the Madonna located in the niche of the basilica's bell tower.
In the afternoon, after the statue leaves the basilica, the procession begins, marking the highlight of the festival. The parade winds through the historic streets of Agrigento—including Via Pirandello, Via Roma, Porta di Ponte, Via Atenea, Via Porcello, Salita Cognata, Via San Girolamo, and the Cathedral area—until it reaches the Church of Sant'Alfonso, where a mass is celebrated with all the communities of the historic center. The statue then returns to the basilica via a second route that crosses the heart of the city once more. In the most recent edition, the procession was also linked to the memory of the 170th anniversary of the proclamation of the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception (1854) and the Dedication of the church.
Alongside the religious aspect, the festival brings the traditional Immaculate Conception Fair to the streets of Agrigento, with stalls and markets that lead to temporary changes in traffic in the center. It is an opportunity for citizens and visitors to experience the provincial capital on one of its most well-attended days, where faith, folklore, and community life merge into a single identity-defining festival of Western Sicily.
The 2026 Feast of the Immaculate Conception in Agrigento is expected to take place, as per tradition, on December 8th, the Marian solemnity around which the devotion of the city's historic center revolves. The exact dates of the preparatory novena and the full program (mass times, procession route, cultural initiatives) have not yet been published by the Parish-Basilica of the Immaculate. It is expected that the edition will maintain the usual format: the days of the novena in the basilica, the early morning brass band wake-up call, the Eucharistic celebrations, the floral tribute by the Fire Brigade, and the afternoon procession of the statue along the streets of Agrigento's historic center, accompanied by the traditional fair. The program will be updated as soon as it is released by the organizers.
