Devotion to the Immaculate Conception through novenas, processions, and the ancient traditions of December 8th
The Feast of the Immaculate Conception is one of the oldest and most deeply rooted religious celebrations in Campobello di Licata, a town in the province of Agrigento, in the heart of Sicily. Every year, in the early days of December, the entire community gathers around the Gesù e Maria Church, the city's oldest religious site, to honor the Immaculate Virgin with a program of celebrations that blends devotion, solidarity, and popular tradition.
The festivities begin with the novena, which kicks off at the end of November with a solemn Holy Mass, the inauguration of the Charity Raffle, and the City Advent Vigil. In the following days, the novena is organized around thematic days that involve the different souls of the town: Family Day, with the participation of children and teenagers from catechism classes, the Day for Emigrants and the Unemployed, and the Day for Entrepreneurs and Workers. Each evening includes the Rosary, the recitation of the novena, and Holy Mass.
The celebrations are organized by the Sacra Famiglia Pastoral Unit together with the Gesù e Maria Parish, with the presence of priests and religious figures from the diocese.
The highlight of the festival is December 8th, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. Holy Masses are celebrated in the morning, while the solemn Eucharistic Liturgy takes place in the evening, followed by the procession of the Virgin's statue through the city streets, accompanied by civil and military authorities and a large turnout of the faithful. Before returning to the church, the evocative act of entrusting the city to the Immaculate Virgin takes place.
Alongside the liturgical program, the festival preserves some typical Sicilian popular traditions. On the eve of the feast, the vamparotti are lit—large bonfires set up in the various neighborhoods of the town, symbols of light and community. It is also the time for the muffuletta, the characteristic wheat bread flavored with fennel or cumin seeds, which is traditionally enjoyed on the evening of December 7th, seasoned and stuffed according to family recipes.
Between prayer, moments of solidarity, and popular warmth, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception represents a defining identity event for Campobello di Licata that draws those who live far away back to town every year, renewing the community's bond with its history and the Immaculate Virgin.
The 2026 Feast of the Immaculate Conception in Campobello di Licata will have its central moment on December 8th, with morning Holy Masses and the evening procession of the Virgin's statue through the city streets. In the preceding days, the novena will take place, organized by the Sacra Famiglia Pastoral Unit and the Gesù e Maria Parish, featuring the customary days dedicated to families, workers, and emigrants. The detailed schedule of times and events will be announced by the parish closer to the date.
The celebrations are held at the Gesù e Maria Church and along the streets of the center of Campobello di Licata (AG), for the December 8th procession.
