About Circus in Borgo

Every July, the Rione Ospedale in Contrada, a small town in the Irpinia region just a few kilometers from Avellino, transforms into an open-air circus. Circus in Borgo brings jugglers, stilt walkers, magicians, clowns, acrobats, and fire performers to the narrow streets, accompanied by live music, DJ sets, and food stalls serving local specialties. These three free-entry evenings are designed for families and children, breathing new life, light, and color into the village streets.

An open-air circus in the heart of Irpinia

For three nights in July, the Rione Ospedale in Contrada, a small town in the Province of Avellino in Campania, sheds its residential skin to become a continuous stage. Circus in Borgo is an event dedicated to circus and street arts: jugglers, stilt walkers, magicians, clowns, acrobats, and fire performers take over alleys, squares, and courtyards, while the audience moves freely from one performance to the next. There is no big top and no fixed seating, as the show happens right among the houses, just steps away from the spectators.

The village as a stage

The event's formula is simple and highly effective: instead of concentrating everything on a single stage, the organizers distribute performances along the district's route. Visitors find themselves immersed in the event from the very first step, with no tickets or assigned seats. This choice highlights the village's intimate architecture—the stairs, arches, and house facades—making every evening unique.

  • Roaming shows featuring stilt walkers, mimes, and street artists along the district's streets
  • Close-up magic and illusionism, with magicians directly engaging the audience
  • Aerial acrobatics and juggling, often accompanied by live music
  • Fire shows in the final part of the evenings, the most anticipated moment for the crowd
  • Comedy and clowning, specifically designed for younger audiences

Music, DJ sets, and Irpinian flavors

Alongside the circus program, each evening has its own soundtrack: DJ sets, live bands, and performers alternating between Italian and international repertoires keep the district lively until late at night. Food stalls complete the picture with typical Irpinian products—a land known for some of the most important DOC wines in Southern Italy, such as Taurasi, Fiano di Avellino, and Greco di Tufo, all produced nearby—and a rustic cuisine featuring fresh pasta, cured meats, and mountain cheeses. There is also a corner dedicated to children, with face painting and entertainment, making Circus in Borgo one of the most family-friendly summer events in the entire area.

An event that has grown over time

Circus in Borgo is not a new arrival: the second edition was already held in July 2019, promoted by the "Accuminciamm ra nui" association with municipal patronage. After the break imposed by the pandemic, the festival restarted in 2023 with its third edition and has grown year after year, becoming a recognizable fixture of the Irpinian summer, now included in the Sistema Irpinia tourism promotion circuit of the Province of Avellino. Today, the organization is managed by APS Circus Event, with the continued patronage of the Municipality of Contrada, and admission remains completely free.

Contrada and inland Campania

Contrada has just over three thousand inhabitants and is nestled on the slopes descending toward the Sabato valley, in that inland Campania that mass tourism often passes by without stopping. This is precisely why events like Circus in Borgo have a value that goes beyond the spectacle: they bring people back to the streets of a neighborhood, provide work for artists and small local businesses, and showcase a way of experiencing village festivals that doesn't need huge numbers to succeed. Those visiting Irpinia in July will find an authentic, family-friendly evening just a stone's throw from the provincial capital, Avellino.

Tips for your visit

The shows are concentrated in the evening hours, when the heat subsides and the village lights up. It is advisable to arrive a little early to park comfortably and walk through the district at a leisurely pace, perhaps having dinner at the stalls before the main acts begin. Comfortable shoes are recommended: the route is short but slightly uphill, like the rest of the town.

Circus in Borgo — edition 2026

The sixth edition of Circus in Borgo took place from July 17 to 19, 2026, in the Rione Ospedale of Contrada, promoted by APS Circus Event with the patronage of the Municipality. Three evenings with free admission featuring magic, clowning, stilt walkers, juggling, aerial acrobatics, fire shows, and roaming performances in the alleys, accompanied each night by music, DJ sets, and food stalls with typical Irpinian products.

Circus in Borgo 2026, the sixth edition

From July 17 to 19, 2026, the Rione Ospedale of Contrada, in the Province of Avellino, hosted the sixth edition of Circus in Borgo, promoted by APS Circus Event with the patronage of the Municipality of Contrada. The three evenings were hosted by Joy Saveriano, who introduced the various artists performing along the district's route.

The program brought together magic, comedy, juggling, acrobatics, and fire shows, with roaming performances that directly involved the public on the streets. Each evening, a different musical act closed the program, while food stalls and face painting accompanied the entire event. Admission, as per tradition, was completely free.
