The festival of the patron saint of seafarers in the heart of Marsala
The Celebrations in Honor of Saint Francis of Paola are one of the most deeply felt devotional events in the city of Marsala, in the province of Trapani, Sicily. The saint, a thaumaturge originally from Calabria and venerated as the protector of seafarers, is celebrated every year in May by the community that gathers around the parish dedicated to him in the Perriere district.
The festival is more than just a religious moment: for a few days, life in the district revolves around the celebrations. Holy masses, concerts, folk group performances, and entertainment events involve both adults and children, including the catechism students. It is a local festival in the heart of a seaside city, where popular devotion blends with the warmth of the community.
The most evocative moment is the procession that reaches the port of Marsala, accompanied by a marching band through the main city streets. Upon reaching the sea, the symbolic gesture of casting a laurel wreath into the waves is performed, in memory of all those who lost their lives at sea and as an invocation of protection for sailors. It is in this rite that one captures the deep bond between Saint Francis of Paola and the maritime vocation of Marsala.
The veneration for Saint Francis of Paola in Marsala is part of a tradition widespread throughout Western Sicily, where the Calabrian saint is invoked as the patron of navigators. The festivities, managed by the Saint Francis of Paola parish, represent an opportunity for the entire community to meet and are a highly anticipated appointment in the Marsala spring calendar.
The 2026 edition of the celebrations in honor of Saint Francis of Paola took place in Marsala from May 14 to 17, with a program that combined liturgical moments, music, and popular tradition. The celebrations were coordinated by the festival committee led by the parish priest Father Giuseppe Titone, with the participation of Father Enrico Parolari, educator and trainer of the Archdiocese of Milan, for the liturgical moments. The heart of the festival, as per tradition, was the procession to the port with the casting of the laurel wreath into the sea and the Sunday city procession.
The festivities take place in the Perriere district in Marsala, at the Saint Francis of Paola parish. Marsala can be reached by car via the A29 (junction for Mazara del Vallo/Marsala), by train via the Marsala railway station on the Trapani-Palermo line, and by plane from the Trapani-Birgi airport, located just a few kilometers away.
The festival takes place in May, with a program spread over several days that culminates in the procession to the port and the city procession on Sunday.
All celebrations and events are free and open to the public.
