A living nativity scene set within the evocative Capuchin catacombs of Castelvetrano

During the Christmas season, the catacombs of the Capuchin Friars' convent in Castelvetrano are transformed into a scene from another time to host La Grotta del Messia, one of the most beloved living nativity scenes in western Sicily. The underground setting, carved with nooks, niches, and stone galleries, offers visitors a unique and intimate atmosphere, perfect for experiencing the wonder of the Nativity in an authentically sacred context.
The nativity scene unfolds along a route featuring approximately twenty expertly reconstructed settings. Over sixty costumed performers bring to life the characters and daily trades of the Year Zero: the blacksmith, the carpenter, the spinner, the baker, the shepherd, and many other figures from the ancient world. The journey through these scenes leads the spectator toward the Nativity grotto, the emotional heart of the entire representation.
The event is organized by the cultural association La Perla Imperiale, led by Carlo Salluzzo, in collaboration with the Capuchin Friars of Castelvetrano. Beyond the historical re-enactment, the route includes free tastings of local products, blending the spiritual experience with the flavors of the Trapani gastronomic tradition. The arrival of the Three Wise Men is a highly anticipated moment, as they reach the nativity scene in a procession on Epiphany, accompanied by the drums of the Castrum Veteranum group.
Now in its eighteenth edition in 2025, La Grotta del Messia has become a cornerstone of the Christmas calendar in the municipality of Castelvetrano, in the province of Trapani, attracting visitors from all over Sicily each year. The setting of the catacombs, combined with the collective effort of the volunteer performers, makes this living nativity one of the most heartfelt expressions of the popular and religious traditions of the Selinunte territory.
Details for the 2026 edition of La Grotta del Messia have not yet been released by the organizers. Following the custom of previous years, the living nativity is expected to take place in the catacombs of the Capuchin Friars of Castelvetrano between December and Epiphany, with the usual route through the settings and free tastings of local products. The final dates and program will be published by the La Perla Imperiale association closer to Christmas.
