The patronal feast of Salemi in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, held on December 8th
December 8th, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, is the most significant day on the religious calendar of Salemi, an ancient hilltop town in the province of Trapani, in the heart of the Belice Valley. The Feast of the Immaculate Conception is the city's patronal festival: on this day, the entire community gathers around its Venerated Protectress, the Blessed Virgin Mary, in a display of popular faith that attracts pilgrims from all the surrounding towns.
The Marian cult in Salemi has its roots in the Byzantine period, when Basilian monks spread devotion to the Virgin. Devotion to the Immaculate took deep root in the 14th century with the arrival of the Conventual Franciscan Fathers. The precious wooden statue venerated today arrived in Salemi in 1740 from Palermo, donated by the local priest Gioacchino Genco: since then, the Virgin has been honored as the city's protectress. The sculpture, about two meters tall, depicts the Madonna with her hands clasped on her chest and a golden mantle in front and blue on the back; for the feast, it is adorned with gold, flowers, and ex-voto jewels offered by the faithful. Salemi is considered first in the entire Diocese of Mazara in its devotion to the Immaculate.
The festival is preceded by a solemn novena starting on November 29th: every day, in the late afternoon, the Holy Rosary, the Stellario, and Holy Mass are celebrated in the Mother Church. On December 8th, the day opens at dawn with the alborata (morning wake-up call) and bell ringing, followed by morning masses. In mid-morning, the solemn Eucharistic celebration takes place, featuring the lighting of the votive lamp and the presentation of the city's silver key to the Madonna by civic authorities. In the afternoon, after Holy Mass, the solemn procession with the statue begins through the streets of the historic center, with floral tributes in Piazza Santa Maria. The day concludes in the evening with a fireworks display.
In Salemi, the Feast of the Immaculate is traditionally linked to that of Saint Nicholas of Bari, celebrated on December 6th: two days of devotion and identity that mark the beginning of the Salemi Advent. Particularly moving is the hymn "Lodate Maria", sung by the faithful with a melody passed down through generations as a unique expression of praise to the Virgin.
Participating in the Feast of the Immaculate means immersing yourself in the authentic popular religiosity of western Sicily: the historic center of Salemi, dominated by the Norman-Swabian Castle, provides the backdrop for the rituals, while the streets come alive with illuminations and a gathered, festive crowd. It is an opportunity to discover a village rich in history and traditions in the province of Trapani.
The 2026 Feast of the Immaculate Conception in Salemi will be celebrated on December 8th, the fixed date of the Marian solemnity and the heart of the city's patronal tradition. The festival will be preceded, as is customary, by the novena starting on November 29th and the Feast of Saint Nicholas on December 6th.
Building on previous editions, the day of December 8th includes the morning wake-up call, masses in the Mother Church, the solemn Eucharistic celebration with the presentation of the silver key to the Madonna, and, in the afternoon, the solemn procession with the 18th-century statue through the streets of the historic center, with floral tributes in Piazza Santa Maria.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition (mass times, novena preachers, potential fireworks, and civil events) will be announced by the Mother Church Parish in the weeks leading up to the festival. This page will be updated as soon as the official calendar is available.
