About Sangiorgese Carnival

Every winter, the streets of Castel San Giorgio, in the province of Salerno, come alive with vibrant floats, masked groups, and confetti. The Castel San Giorgio Carnival is a community-driven celebration, with floats handcrafted by local neighborhood associations and paraded through the town. Piazza Martiri d'Ungheria hosts the children's carnival party, featuring entertainment and beloved cartoon characters. Free admission, authentic local atmosphere, and strong community spirit.

The Castel San Giorgio Carnival: A community celebration in the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese

Every year, between February and March, the center of Castel San Giorgio—a town of nearly 14,000 residents in the province of Salerno, Campania—transforms into a grand open-air stage. The Castel San Giorgio Carnival is one of the most cherished events on the local calendar: allegorical floats, handcrafted over the preceding months by local associations, parade along the main streets accompanied by masked groups, choreography, and music, while Piazza Martiri d'Ungheria becomes the heart of the festivities dedicated to children.

A festival built by local associations

The uniqueness of the Sangiorgese Carnival lies in its origins. It is not managed by an external organization: it is the neighborhood and district associations that design, build, and animate each float, with coordination from the Municipality. Work begins weeks in advance in community centers and workshops, involving volunteers of all ages: some model papier-mâché, others sew costumes, and some choreograph the performances.

Among the groups bringing their floats to the streets each year are the San Michele Arcangelo Association, the Sant'Antonio Association, the Maria SS. di Costantinopoli Community Center, the La Mitica 500 Association, the Santa Croce Association, and the Fratellanza Santissima Annunziata. Themes change annually, drawing freely from popular culture: fairy tale and cartoon characters, references to Neapolitan tradition, current events, and environmental messages.

The parades and routes

The program spans several days, with at least two or three parades held between Saturday, Sunday, and Shrove Tuesday. The processions cross the town center and reach the surrounding hamlets: in recent years, they have passed through Via Dante Alighieri, Via Biagio Alfano, Via Garibaldi, Via Valesana, Via degli Iuliani, and the Aiello-Campomanfoli area, where the Community Center serves as the gathering point for the floats before departure.

  • Float gathering in the early afternoon, followed by the start of the parade
  • Different routes each day to cover both the center and the hamlets
  • Musical accompaniment and masked groups following the floats
  • Closing festivities in the square with music and confetti

The Carnival Party in the square

Alongside the parades, the Municipality organizes a day dedicated primarily to children in Piazza Martiri d'Ungheria: entertainment, mascots, games, and shows designed for families. It is the moment when the Carnival concentrates in one place, becoming a true community celebration, with parents and grandparents accompanying their masked little ones.

An environmentally conscious Carnival

For several editions, the municipal administration has chosen to give the festival a sustainable footprint, asking participants and spectators to avoid spray cans, plastic confetti, and plastic streamers. This choice aims to maintain traditional fun while reducing the waste left on the streets after the parade.

Why it's worth visiting

Those looking for a massive tourist-driven Carnival will find larger spectacles elsewhere; however, those who want to understand how Carnival is truly experienced in an inland town in Campania will find an authentic model here. The scale is that of a community party: the floats pass just meters from the spectators, the builders are your neighbors, and participation matters more than the show itself. It is also a great opportunity to discover Castel San Giorgio, a village in the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese area located halfway between Salerno, the Amalfi Coast, and the Vesuvius area, well-connected to the A30 motorway and easily reachable from Naples and Salerno.

2026 Carnival in Castel San Giorgio

The 2026 Carnival opened on Saturday, February 14th, with the first parade of allegorical floats along the streets of Castel San Giorgio, in the province of Salerno. On Sunday, February 15th, the festivities moved to Piazza Martiri d'Ungheria with the Carnival Party dedicated primarily to children, animated by the characters from Madagascar. On Tuesday, February 17th, Shrove Tuesday, the final parade was held.

Six floats were on the streets, all built by local associations: Snow White, The Bullfight, The Pirates, India, Let's Save the Bees, and The Lion King.
