The Via Filangieri neighborhood festival featuring an itinerant novena, music, and the August 1st procession
In the town of Cava de' Tirreni, in the province of Salerno, the Campania region maintains a dense network of neighborhood festivals that mark the summer season. The Sant'Alfonso Maria de' Liguori Festival is one of these: it is celebrated around the Via Filangieri parish in the Natalia district, involving families, volunteers, and a committee for weeks in a calendar that alternates prayer, culture, and entertainment.
This is not a staged tourist event, but a grassroots celebration: streets are adorned with festive lights, balconies are decorated, chairs are brought out in front of doorways, and for a few days, the neighborhood becomes a large open-air square. Visitors from outside will find a spontaneous welcome, much closer to the real life of the district than to a standard event program.
Alfonso Maria de' Liguori (1696-1787) is one of the most beloved figures in Campanian devotion. Born in Marianella, near Naples, he was first a lawyer and later a priest. He founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer and spent his final years in Pagani, just a few kilometers from Cava de' Tirreni. Author of spiritual texts and popular hymnsโhe is credited with the famous carol "Tu scendi dalle stelle"โhe is remembered as the saint who knew how to speak to simple people. His liturgical memorial falls on August 1st, and the entire festival in Cava revolves around this date.
The most distinctive feature of the festival is the itinerant novena: the effigy of the Saint does not remain in the church but is carried through the homes of the neighborhood, from family to family, with moments of rosary and shared prayer. It is a practice that transforms devotion into a neighborly act and, evening by evening, prepares the community for the day of the feast.
Alongside the spiritual appointments, the committee organizes testimonial meetings, shows designed for younger people, and entertainment evenings open to the entire neighborhood. In the most recent edition, names from the Campanian music scene such as Giusy Attanasio and Alberto Selly took the stage, while the streets of the district lit up with the Towers of Lights and Colors show, one of the most photographed moments of the festival.
The climax arrives on the day of the liturgical memorial, with solemn Eucharistic celebrations and the traditional procession of the Saint through the streets of the neighborhood. The pageant crosses the decorated streets, stops in front of houses and shops, and returns the statue to the church in the evening. Immediately afterward, the neighborhood moves toward the stage for musical entertainment, which concludes the most attended day of the entire calendar.
The festivities conclude the following day with final holy masses and the presentation of the "Ciccio Troiano" Award, a now-fixed appointment that officially marks the end of the festival and bids farewell to the community until the following year.
Those who travel up to the Metelliana Valley for the festival can easily add a visit to the city. Cava de' Tirreni is known for the porticoes of Borgo Scacciaventi, which make the main street a unique covered promenade in Campania, and for the Benedictine Abbey of the Most Holy Trinity, just outside the town. The location is convenient: we are halfway between Salerno and the Amalfi Coast, in an area where summer patronal festivals follow one another from neighborhood to neighborhood throughout the season.
For 2026, the Sant'Alfonso Maria de' Liguori Parish has built a program that starts on Sunday, July 19 and runs until Sunday, August 2, alternating religious appointments and moments open to the entire neighborhood. It is an edition that aims to bring generations together: alongside traditional celebrations, there is space for shows designed for younger people, biblical quizzes, catechesis, and testimonial meetings.
The highlight is Saturday, August 1st, the liturgical memorial of Sant'Alfonso, with solemn Eucharistic celebrations and the procession of the Saint along the streets of the district. The evening continues with musical entertainment and the luminous spectacle of the Towers of Lights and Colors, which transforms the neighborhood streets into an illuminated path.
On Sunday, August 2, the final holy masses and the presentation of the "Ciccio Troiano" Award officially close the festivities in Cava de' Tirreni, in the province of Salerno.
The exact times of individual events are released by the parish on the flyer and social channels during the festival days.
