The ancient egg-begging tradition that heralds spring in the Alta Langa hills
The Cantè j'euv (literally "singing for eggs") is one of the most evocative begging traditions in Piedmont, deeply rooted in the countryside of the Alta Langa and Roero regions. In Paroldo, a tiny municipality in the Province of Cuneo perched on the ridges between the Bormida and Belbo valleys, this folk ritual has always marked the arrival of spring: on March evenings, groups of singers walk through the village streets, chanting ancient verses beneath windows to request eggs in exchange for a blessing for a good harvest.
The egg-begging custom has its roots in the peasant culture of lower Piedmont. Once upon a time, as spring approached, groups of young people would travel by night from farm to farm. Reaching the courtyards, illuminated only by the moon, they would sing to wake the master and invite him to offer eggs—a precious commodity at the time and a symbol of fertility. Among the singers, the fratucìn stood out: a boy dressed as a fake friar who carried a basket on his back to collect not only eggs, but also bread, wine, and a few coins.
The collected eggs were not just of economic value; they were destined for the great Easter Monday omelette, a moment of celebration and communion to which the entire village was invited. Singing was most frequent in front of the farms with the most livestock, a gesture that combined joy, social interaction, and an ancient form of justice and redistribution among the village families.
In Paroldo, the Cantè j'euv has been brought back to the streets thanks to a project involving the children of the Sale delle Langhe Primary School, accompanied by local musicians who supported their voices with guitars and accordions. It is an evening of emotion and authenticity, where ancient verses resonate once again in the streets of the small Alta Langa village, bridging generations and passing on the memory of a ritual that risked being lost.
The initiative has united several towns in the Langhe: in addition to Paroldo, the municipalities and Pro Loco associations of Sale delle Langhe, Castelnuovo di Ceva, and Sale San Giovanni have collaborated, along with local sports and volunteer groups. The journey concludes with a ribota—the traditional Piedmontese convivial feast—hosted by the Pro Loco of Sale San Giovanni, featuring a traditional dinner of ravioli al plin and group singing.
The Cantè j'euv in Paroldo is much more than a simple re-enactment: it is a moment of sharing, rediscovering roots, and building precious ties between generations and the towns of the Langhe.
