A village festival rooted in tradition

The Brazier and Sombrero Festival is one of the most beloved summer events in Bientina, a small town in the Province of Pisa overlooking the ancient Padule wetlands in Tuscany. Now in its 23rd edition in 2026, the festival is organized by the Contrada Centro Storico, one of the most vibrant groups in the Bientina community, deeply tied to the tradition of the Bientina Palio. For a few evenings, the Municipal Sports Field on Via Leonardo da Vinci transforms into a large, convivial gathering place where generations of locals and visitors meet over great food and community spirit.

Sombreri, the festival's signature dish

The festival's curious name comes from its most distinctive dish: sombreri, unique round ravioli filled with ricotta and spinach, whose shape recalls a traditional Mexican hat. These are the absolute stars of the evening, served with meat sauce, pink sauce, or tomato sauce. They are accompanied by penne with the same sauces for those who prefer a more classic pasta dish. Over the years, this dish has become a small identity symbol for Bientina, capable of attracting food lovers from neighboring towns.

Tuscan grilling and main courses

The other soul of the festival is the brazier, celebrating the great tradition of Tuscan grilling. The grill features one-kilo Florentine steaks, tagliata with arugula and parmesan, veal steaks, and sausages. For seafood lovers, there is fragrant fried squid and shrimp, accompanied by classic sides like French fries and salad. To round off the meal, enjoy homemade desserts like Torta della Nonna and Torta del Nonno.

The Merchants' Festival evening

Among the scheduled evenings, Friday, June 19th, has a special flavor: in conjunction with the Merchants' Festival, a promotional fixed-price menu is offered, designed for families and groups, including a first course, a choice of main course, salad, and dessert. It is the perfect opportunity to experience the town in celebration, among the stalls and entertainment in the center, before heading to the Contrada's food stands.

The Brazier and Sombrero Festival is more than just a food festival; it is an important moment in the life of the district. The Contrada Centro Storico, winner of the Bientina Palio, brings the festival to life with the pride and participation typical of Tuscan historical re-enactments.
