Ancient Owl Fair

A centuries-old tradition in the heart of the Pisan hills

The Ancient Owl Fair is one of the most iconic and highly anticipated events in the calendar of Crespina Lorenzana, a small town in the Province of Pisa, Tuscany. It takes place every year on September 29th, the feast day of Saint Michael the Archangel, the town's patron saint, and has always been closely linked to the local patronal festivities. The event is listed in the Regional Register of Historic Fairs of Tuscany, a recognition that testifies to its antiquity and cultural value to the region.

The origins: hunting decoys

The fair originated from an ancient custom of the Tuscan rural and hunting world: the breeding and training of owls and decoy birds, which were once used for hunting. Historically, Crespina was a reference point for local breeders and hunters who gathered on Saint Michael's Day to trade specimens and equipment. Over time, the fair evolved into a popular festival while keeping the memory of that tradition alive: today, owls are still the protagonists, but in the spirit of protecting and valuing these protected species. The town has dedicated a bronze monument to the tawny owl and hosts an Owl Breeding Center, which has become an open-air park for the rescue of nocturnal birds of prey.

The fair day brings the entire historic center of Crespina to life with a rich program suitable for all ages. Attractions returning every year include:

Lunch and dinner are served at the Pro Loco park, featuring Tuscan culinary specialties.

Waiting for the Owl

The fair itself is preceded by the "Waiting for the Owl" event, two days that serve as a prelude to the festival with street food, artisan markets, children's entertainment, and owl and falconry displays. It is the perfect opportunity to soak up the village atmosphere in the days leading up to September 29th.

The Ancient Owl Fair is much more than a local village festival: it is the story of an ancient bond between the community of Crespina, its hills, and the birds of prey that have become its symbol. Organized by the Municipality of Crespina Lorenzana together with the Pro Loco Crespina Lorenzana APS, the event attracts hundreds of visitors every year from across the Province of Pisa and all of Tuscany.
