Every summer, the sprawling meadow in front of the Tenuta del Cavaliere—known as the Bosco del Cavaliere—becomes the stage for the Ateleta Lamb Festival, an Alto Sangro gastronomic tradition dating back to 1969. Organized by the local Alpini Group and Civil Protection, the festival celebrates lamb and Abruzzo mountain specialties, featuring Ateleta-style polenta, arrosticini, and fragrant grilled meats, all set to a backdrop of folk music and authentic flavors just a stone's throw from the Majella National Park.

An Alto Sangro tradition born in 1969

The Ateleta Lamb Festival is one of the most deeply rooted culinary celebrations in the Alto Sangro area, held in the town of Ateleta, in the province of L'Aquila, on the southern border of Abruzzo and Molise. The first edition dates back to 1969. Since then, for generations, the festival has taken place on the large meadow in front of the Tenuta del Cavaliere—a spot locals affectionately call the Bosco del Cavaliere. This historic 200-hectare estate, featuring a stately manor, a chapel dedicated to Saint Michael, and ancient stables, is now under municipal ownership.

By car: Ateleta is accessible from the Roccaraso/Alto Sangro motorway exit; the village is just a few kilometers from Roccaraso and Castel di Sangro. By train: the nearest station is Castel di Sangro, on the Sulmona–Isernia line. By plane: the nearest airports are Pescara and Naples.
