In cim' all'Ara – Folk Festival

A new folk festival in the heart of Abruzzo

«In cim' all'Ara» is a folk festival that brings the village of Cansano to life. This mountain town in the province of L'Aquila sits at an altitude of approximately 835 meters, just a few kilometers from Sulmona in the Peligna Valley, at the gateway to the Maiella National Park. The event, promoted by the Municipality of Cansano with the support of a volunteer committee, debuted in 2025 with the goal of restoring community spirit, rural traditions, and local products to the town's historic Piazza XX Settembre, the civic heart of the village.

Music, markets, and local flavors

The festival program weaves together various elements of Abruzzese folk culture. Live music provides the soundtrack for the entire day, while the farmers' market showcases local producers offering honey, olive oil, cheeses, lavender, and the culinary excellence of the Peligna Valley. The event also features traditional games for families and children, artistic workshops, and food stalls serving rustic, traditional dishes.

Excursions and discovering the village

A key feature of the festival is its deep connection to the landscape and nature surrounding Cansano. Past editions have included guided hikes along local trails, such as the «Wine and Chestnuts» walk, as well as e-bike tours to explore the colors of the Peligna autumn. Cansano is also known for the nearby Ocriticum archaeological park, a testament to ancient Italic and Roman settlements that adds significant cultural value to the event.

More than just an event, «In cim' all'Ara» serves as a community gathering: an opportunity to bring together Cansano locals, returning emigrants, and visitors around the table and shared traditions. With its autumn and winter editions, the festival honors the slow pace of life in the Abruzzo mountains while celebrating the gastronomic and cultural heritage of this corner of the province of L'Aquila.
