The magic of Christmas amidst the medieval alleys of one of Italy's most beautiful villages

In the heart of the Peligna Valley, perched at nearly 700 meters above sea level between the Maiella massif and the Sulmona plain, the village of Pacentro (L'Aquila, Abruzzo) is one of the most evocative places to experience the Christmas atmosphere. Recognized as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy and dominated by the towers of the Caldora Castle, its maze of alleys, arches, and white stone staircases becomes the natural backdrop for the Christmas Markets every December.
The event enlivens the historic center with over fifty stalls set up in wooden chalets and within the doorways of historic homes, serving as the beating heart around Piazza Umberto I. The stalls host local artists and craftsmen displaying nativity scenes, terracotta figurines, ceramics, woodwork, glassware, jewelry, gift items, and small works born from the Abruzzo artisan tradition.
There is no shortage of food and wine stands featuring typical Abruzzo specialties and local Christmas sweets, which warm up your visit as you wander from one alley to the next. The scent of local products accompanies visitors along a path that combines taste, craftsmanship, and tradition.
The Pacentro Markets are an event designed for the little ones too: Santa's House, elves, children's entertainment, live music, and street performers make the day a celebration for the whole family. The authentic and intimate atmosphere of the village, with lights illuminating the medieval alleys, has seen peaks of over ten thousand visitors in its busiest editions.
Organized by the Pro Loco of Pacentro with the patronage of the Municipality, the Christmas Markets are also an opportunity to discover a village with an ancient history, linked to the monastery of San Vincenzo al Volturno and developed in the Norman era around its fortress. An experience that combines the magic of Christmas with the timeless charm of inland Abruzzo.
The Pacentro Christmas Markets return in 2026 to the medieval alleys of the village in the province of L'Aquila. At the moment, the official dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the Pro Loco. The features of the event are confirmed: wooden chalets with local crafts, typical Abruzzo products, nativity scenes, and activities for children with Santa's House in the heart of one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy. The detailed program will be published as the event approaches.
Pacentro is located in the province of L'Aquila, just a few kilometers from Sulmona. By car: take the A25 motorway exit for Pratola Peligna-Sulmona, then follow the signs for Pacentro. By train: arrive at Sulmona station, which is connected to the village by local buses.
Access to the markets is free.
The historic center is characterized by stone alleys and staircases: comfortable footwear is recommended. Given the altitude and the winter season, warm clothing is advised. Parking is available in areas on the outskirts of the village.
